If schools don't open on 1st June. . .

. . .where would that leave nurseries?

I'm pretty sure I'm being a bit dim with this, but nurseries do seem to be getting left out of conversation alot.

If the Government miraculously state that schools can't open, will the same apply to nurseries? Can they be forced to close?

Again, I know I'm being pretty dim but I'm losing track of what to make of things with so much information/misinformation there is out there.

Ive currently told our nursery DC will be in on June 1st but I'm still not 100% in my decision. I just said yes to keep his place and wasn't sure what would happen if I ssid no (would I officially have to pull him out?).

Yes Nurseries would be closed too

Yes.

Obviously a caveat about key worker children applies.

Ok, thanks.

I had thought as much. I just doubted things due to the fact that out nursery is currently set to have just 6 children in. At present, the pushback on schools opening is the sheer amount of students they would need to accommodate.

It makes sense that nurseries would have to close but, at the same time, nothing is making sense to me at the moment.

I'd say it's impossible to know whether the government would apply the same criteria to schools. Nurseries have much fewer children per room than schools so and obviously different rules apply. And obviously if they're open, you will most likely have to pay to keep the place.

FTMF30 · 16/05/2020 20:52

@Dinosforall That's what I was also thinking re. the fewer children. But then again, social distancing is impossible in a nursery setting.

I feel uneasy sending DC back just yet but can't really afford to pay just to keep a space. DH doesn't have much work at the moment so we may have to just pull him out altogetherSad.

The nursery I work in can take around 55 children in our preschool room.

@gingersnaps14 Will your nursery be opening on 1st June?

Sorry, only just seen this.

Yes it's opening, and will have a large percentage of children back (havent got final numbers yet). They have also told staff not to remove soft furnishings and shared resources etc just wash them once a week, which really worries me in terms of potential infection spread.
Perhaps you could ask what measures your nursery will have in place, that might help with your decision?

greathat · 20/05/2020 08:30

In the briefing they said "the science" said that schools could open when they had an effective track and trace programme up and running. So I suppose this all dependent on how that's going in the next week and a half

Frazzled2207 · 20/05/2020 08:35

I think they are more likely to open. Some councils have said that schools should not open but that does not apply to nurseries.
I think Boris will press on with the 1st although in reality many schools will stay closed and most parents will not send their children. Private nurseries need money coming in so are more likely to open IMO.

FTMF30 · 20/05/2020 17:04

@gingersnaps14 No worries. That is worrying regarding the soft furnishings. Our nursery has said they will be removing soft furnishings amongst other measures they will take. The trouble is, with all the measures in place, it just won't be the kind of beneficial setting for babies/toddlers that nursery usually provides.

@Frazzled2207 That's what I'm thinking. I'm pathetically disappointed about this though as I want a decision made for me (i.e. nurseries remain closed). I just can't make up my mind what's best. I was considering getting anti nail biting varnish to stop DC putting his fingers in his mouth 🙈.

It's guidance. Not law.
