DD has been in Year 1 for 10 school days and has only been given 1 ORT book, is this reasonable?

I need your opinion before I decide whether to see the teacher tomorrow.
TIA

Because DD is showing signs of being a bookworm we have done all the local libraries (limited) suitable books. I have bought lots of books through the hols including all the read at home ORT at level 5.
She enjoys reading and I have done as much as I can to encourage this through the hols and was hoping not to have to buy more books just yet.

Can anyone recommend a reading scheme that will compliment the ORT?

Still waiting for Level 5 to come home for The Magic Key ones. Finished Level 4 sometime back in Reception, and then they have sent some other books home - they do this between all the ORT levels presumably so the children don't get bored with one scheme??? Just means we have yet to hit the apparantly more interesting ORT yet.

popsycal · 18/09/2007 21:29

Corblimey - ds1 can easily read the level 6 ones and enjoying Mr Men books! He reads them to his little brother who is, in turn, obsessed with them now. They aren't brilliantly written but he seems to like them.

Hulababy · 18/09/2007 21:30

corblimeycharlie - I just buy loads of different books, and DD is also reading some of her own story books from when she was younger too - Hungry Caterpillar, Dora, Green Eggs and Ham, etc. We have a selection of scheme type books: ORT, Jolly Phonics, Ladybird, M&S Read It Yorkself books, Red Nose Readers, etc.

popsycal · 18/09/2007 21:30

also - try 'sprinters' books. 'Corgi pups' books too. They are short chapter books. Good for sharing the reading at this stage. DS1 reads a bit and I read a bit.

I guess I am the worst kind of mother too....

The Book People have got some really very good sets of early readers at the moment if people want extra suitable books for their DC to read to them. Personally I would rather blind myself with a branding iron than read one more ORT book than I had to.

Hulababy · 18/09/2007 21:31

Yes, DD likes reading her Little Miss ones - I just sorted all those out for her this past weekend.

popsycal · 18/09/2007 21:31

book people do packs of the sprinters books - really good value

crunchie · 18/09/2007 21:32

ccb Maybe that was a little strong, but I am not saying you are not interested in her reading, like I said, get other books if you must, but why worry abouut homework at 5

It really is one of my pet hates, I never had homework at primary school at all, and I have checked this with my mum!) and strangely enough I can read, write (!) ok spelling is debatable, but I type too fast. Add up and generally am considered pretty OK. Did not having a book home at 5 affect me, no. Just let her enjoy books at home rather than make it a chore

ChasingSquirrels · 18/09/2007 21:32

go to the library rather than buy - they have a massive selection.
the magic key appeared in the level 4 ones, but level 5 is where they have adventures.

kid · 18/09/2007 21:33

I got DS a set from The Book People called Read Write Inc. Phoncis
We haven't started it yet but it supports reading and writing/spelling.
DS is very interested in reading and was recently assessed for reading recovery. He scored well on the assessment

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 18/09/2007 21:35

Bad day Crunchie ???

Not getting involved in this one, but let me tell you YR2 is a shock to the system re homework.

corblimeycharlie · 18/09/2007 21:36

Thanks Popsycal - Don't know how you can show your face around here with your parenting skills.

If I was pushing her I could understand being called the worst type of mother but DD asks for books all the time and the only bookshop in our rubbish little town is a tiny WHSmiths. I find it tough to buy online without recommendations because you can't open it up to see if it suitable.
Will visit Amazon and check out Sprinter and Corgi Pups.
Found Blue Green Bananas vary in ability greatly.

In the sprinters, the finger eater is my favourite

lucykate · 18/09/2007 21:47

my dd is in year 1, so far has had no homework, not read her book but they did swap it for something else as the one in her book bag has been there since july

but her teacher is new, first job, so i suspect needs some settling in time.

gess · 18/09/2007 21:48

ds2 (year 1) has had 12 books this term so far. I wouldn't be happy with the amount you're getting- it gets boring with the same book all the time. In reception he had 2 or 3 books a week - now it gets changed as soon as he's read it (either to me or someone in school).

aintnomountainhighenough · 18/09/2007 21:49

ChasingSquirrels - she can read a little. She knows most of the phonic sounds and has started to sound out words. I have asked already when we will start getting books with words in and I am just told that they change the book on Monday and Friday and we need to work through the series. I was little surprised when I asked the teacher about this to be told that the TA was in charge of changing books etc! TBH I am not particularly happy but I don't want to be pushy yet and of course don't want to push my DD.

jennifersofia · 18/09/2007 21:50

We haven't sent out our guided reading (ability leveled) books yet because we have been assessing children to see what level they should be at. We will begin sending them out later this week. They have been bringing home a free choice reading book every night though.
