Have your Primary School been in touch since schools shut?

Just wondering if your child's school has been in touch since school closed for lockdown. We've not had any personal contact, just general ParentMails and I'm wondering if this is the norm?

Ours have..headteacher has phoned a couple of times and class teacher rang last week, just to check in.

NellMangel · 11/05/2020 00:18

Nope. Apart from comments on work done sent via an app (Tapestry). My DC is in reception. I haven't queried it and don't especially want a call.

A friend with a secondary school age kid says the school rang to speak to her daughter direct. (Catholic school in case that matters)

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 11/05/2020 00:20

Nothing personal. We have been invited to sign up for zooms or calls if we want them. But I haven’t and no ones been in touch.

TheWitchCirce · 11/05/2020 00:26

I'm a teacher and I have rung each of my class every week (apart from Easter holidays). to say Hi, check in on their mental and physical well being, ensure they know how they can access the work and have a chat with their parent. (My class are 10yrs old)

Wow that is so above and beyond what I would expect a teacher to do.
My DS is year 5 and he has had 3 zoom sessions with his class. The teacher asks each child what they've been doing, and what they have enjoyed. They email each days learning the night before and are very responsive to email messages. We got a bit confused with some work last week. I dropped the teacher an email and she had replied within about 20 min.

Passtherioja · 11/05/2020 00:34

@TheWitchCirce-we've been doing that too. It's seems that some schools aren't as bothered but we'll certainly carry on!

ineedaholidaynow · 11/05/2020 00:37

It seems some schools are not as concerned about pupil welfare as they should be. I am a school governor I would not be impressed by that lack of contact.

WhoCaresAnyway95 · 11/05/2020 00:37

Yes, my daughter is in reception and her teacher phoned last week just to check in. We're also speaking regularly on the dojo app and my son who is in nursery, his key worker sends him a video every week of her reading a book and also sends messages from time to time, checking in on him and how he is doing at home. Can't believe some teachers haven't been in touch at all Confused

OnlyBejoking · 11/05/2020 00:37

Our y5 class teacher has been calling for a chat with us to check we're okay

TheWitchCirce · 11/05/2020 00:37

@Abreadsandwich We do not zoom with our class as so many of them do not have a device on which to do so. Therefore the phone call is the only direct interaction I have with them. I miss them all lots and enjoy our weekly chat.

NeverTwerkNaked · 11/05/2020 00:40

Nope. No personal contact.

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 11/05/2020 00:41

My daughters class teacher/another teacher has rang 3, maybe 4 times now. They chat to me or my partner and then speak to my daughter about the work but also general things, like our pets, what shes watched on TV etc. The class teacher is really lovely and sounded quite emotional at times, said she’s missing the kids and is really hoping to be able to say a proper goodbye. They’re year 6 and she had them in year 5 as well.
The school have set lots of work, it’s very well organised. They also email at least twice each week including the head teacher. They sent a message to say if any parents or children are struggling with anything then just call the school and ask to speak to the pastoral team.
I think they’ve been excellent.

myself2020 · 11/05/2020 07:21

Our school does 7-8 daily zoom lessons, and gives feedback on most work send in (year 2)

Clutterbugsmum · 11/05/2020 08:01

Nope, only generic feedback on SeeSaw. We haven't even had any Email contact from the school.

On the other hand DD's high school DD1 form tutor has rung me once and also gave permission DD1 to email her directly. She in year 11 so they wanted to check if she is ok. Her Careers Adviser has also been in contact with us and her to check on her. He known the year group from Yr 7.

DD2 tutor has rung twice, again to check on her. She has also given her some additional websites to look at so she can do extra learning.

Clutterbugsmum · 11/05/2020 08:03

I'm so glad he is in Yr 6, So hopefully we won't have to deal with them again if we have to go into lockdown again.

Reginabambina · 11/05/2020 08:04

We’ve been having daily whole class video calls which parents have to supervise 🙄

Melonportal · 11/05/2020 08:06

DS is in year 1 and we've had nothing personal, just the odd generic message directing us to BBC Bitesize or Joe Wicks PE.

Hersetta427 · 11/05/2020 08:50

No personal contact although they do all get a class video message from their teacher daily. This is for year 4.

I am more disappointed with my daughter's school in year 8 as she has not heard a peep from her form tutor. The school are following their normal timetable and she is being set more for every lesson but not so much as an email from her form tutor or head of year despite having a 25 minute form period scheduled every day.

YouLando · 11/05/2020 08:57

No personal contact whatsoever (primary, Dd is year 6). I'm disappointed tbh.

Dk20 · 11/05/2020 09:00

My ds is 6, in school he has SNA access and resource hours.
Each week the class teacher sets work for the week on Google classroom which we do throughout the week. Dont hear from him much apart from this.
The SNA and resource teacher offer their assistance to me each week to see if theres anything they can do to help with the work set.
They asked if they could do a video call which doesnt suit ds so he speaks on the phone to his SNA once a week just for a general catch up - she also tells him shes seen his work and gives him encouragement.
They do class zoom meetings once in a while which we dont join, ds gets too overwhelmed.
The principal then gets in touch every so often to check in and see how we are getting on and if we need anything more from the school.
Were very supported but it can be very overwhelming, one week we had 11 emails from the school and I'm also WFH and looking after a 10 month old.

CakeCakeCake21 · 11/05/2020 09:03

In addition to general messages from the class teacher and head we have been told we must email the teacher every week, whether with some work for her to look at or generally just to say we are OK, otherwise we will get a call. She is very open to emails and will reply quickly to queries about work etc. She has also sent a few questions for the children to answer about what they have been up to and answered them herself - what have you done that you are proud of for example.

Zhx3 · 11/05/2020 09:09

Both primary dc speak to their teachers via Teams twice a day. Work being set and marked in a timely manner. I think they are doing a great job.

megletthesecond · 11/05/2020 09:13

Yes. DD's ELSA support lady has called her every week. DD even agreed to talk to her last week.
They've been really good and offered her a place if I need it even though they know I'm working at home.

Saisong · 11/05/2020 09:13

Nothing personal here for primary y5 - we get a daily worksheet emailed the night before. It has plenty (too much) work on, but nothing is submitted or checked. We don't have teacher emails, only the generic school admin one. The teachers are however having lots of fun making 'road to Amarillo' type videos and posting them on Facebook for 'moral support' - which doesn't really feel like it when you have a child upset because their teacher didn't feature in the particular video!

In secondary y8 they have again more than enough work via Show My Homework, but I'm annoyed that only about 15% of it is submitted online and marked. It really demotivates the kids from working hard if they are pretty sure no one is bothered about their work. They can at least message individual teachers via SMH who are pretty responsive. No personal contact otherwise apart from one generic email from the form tutor.

Each week it is getting harder and harder to motivate the kids. I'm running out of inspiration too and it all feels like ground hog day. Both kids would jump at the chance to go back to school - which in any other circumstance would be amazing!

isitorisntit · 11/05/2020 09:15

We speak to every child in our class and their parent/carer every week. We also mark work that is sent in via email.
