5 year old writing in pen?

My 5 year old was a really reluctant writer pre-lockdown, she’s come on leaps and bounds since I’ve been teaching her. She actually really enjoys writing now, however she’ll only write with a pen! She says she doesn’t like writing with pencils, she does draw with them just hates writing with them. Is this going to cause problems if/when she goes back to school?

Most schools make children write in pen until they have mastered cursive writing and they earn a 'pen licence'!

There are lots of rules that apply at school and not at home, kids know that. She won't be using a pen at school (that's how it is in every school I know) but I think she might be more likely to accept the rule coming from a teacher. I also wouldn't push the school to allow her use a pen if that is what you're thinking.

You could also try her out with a few fancy pencils and see if that makes her happier! Might just be the 'glamour' of having a pen and the pencil seems boring in comparison.

Yes I remember pen licenses at school, but seems unnecessary to me. We haven’t decided if she is going back yet, lockdown has shown us a one-size-fits-all approach of a classroom of 25-30 has provided an inadequate education to our daughter. I won’t push the pencil then and hope she listens and continues to write if she goes back!
