Reading levels

Sorry I know this is probably discussed loads on here but...
My son is in Reception and is reading yellow books. We have a few that we have brought and he's reading through those well. However, he is still sounding our 99% of words. His fluency is just not there. When should I expect a little more fluency and less sounding out? Would it help giving him easier books or just carrying on?

Thanks

It takes a long time, you just keep going and eventually he'll get there. Just make sure you do a little every day. He will continue with phonics and tricky words all next year too and will gradually become familiar with words.

Do you read to him too? I'd do a pre read of the book where I read the words making sure I follow the text with my finger. Then they read the book themselves. Your dc needs lots of practice and using the same story helps them to learn the actual words from sight not just using phonics.

My daughter made the biggest leap in reading when she read one level for challenge (yellow in your case) and much easier books for fluency. It also made her feel really good! We'd also read the easier ones a couple of times.
It will come - don't worry! Do what feels right :)

Thank you all. Really helpful replies. At what stage/book band should I expect fluency?

He sounds very similar to DS, also in reception - I have just agreed with his teacher to move him up to yellow. DS is very slow to learn words by sight, he has to see them loads of times.

The thing that has most helped DS with fluency is flash carding the more common words - and doing them daily. You could make your own flashcards . Alternatively, now schools have shut Read Write Inc have speedy word slide shows online where you can set how long each word is up for and it runs through them automatically. DS loves them being on my phone and is much happier doing them than with paper ones. You don't need to have used read write Inc at all to use them - it's just common words none of the rhymes / sounds stuff. The first level is start with is red level, here www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/interactives/29096.html . The next levels are green and then purple, you can access them about half way down this page home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/?utm_campaign=learninganywhere&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_content=read-write-inc&utm_team=pri .

DS is now only sounding out maybe 25 to 50% of words (depending on the difficulty of the book) , it's surprising how few words they have to learn by sight to massively improve their fluency.
