Offer from STAHS prep and commute from N10 - advice please x

Hello,
My year 3 daughter has been offered a place to start at STAHS prep (in Wheathampstead) to start in year 4. She’s been at a local state primary in Muswell Hill to date. We absolutely adored STAHS prep and so we are thrilled with the offer and are v keen to accept.
My question is really concerning the commute and whether it’s just too much / too tiring for a year 4 child. Whereas school buses / coaches for Habs, NLCS etc all collect from MH, the closest station to us for the St Albans prep school bus is Southgate which is a 12 mins drive in the morning. The drive isn’t the issue but is it just too much for a primary school child to be effectively getting up at 6.30am and getting home at 5pm every day, plus homework?
I realise there’s a huge amount to be said for attending a primary which is not only free but a five mins walk up the road. And she’s been happy there. But on the flip side, my daughter is academic, has a chance of a wonderful and lovely school, will not need to go through the 11+ and is pretty mature to the extent that I imagine she’ll cope well with the concept of commuting. I also feel she has somewhat outgrown her current school and certainly needs something more challenging. We intended to go private for secondary in any case.

It’s really the potential tiredness, the practicalities of me not being able to run up to the school for whatever reason, her social life being potentially impacted by the fact that play dates may be 45 mins away etc.
Just to say, we do actually intend to relocate to St Albans at some point but in the current climate, that’s impossible so the commute would need to work for a year or so.
I’d be so interested to hear from anyone else who commutes to the school from North London.
Thanks so much. X

Why would you do that? My DDs got into SAHSG from a state school with no tutoring ... it's not that hard! And they have been known to chuck some out before senior school I believe ... although do check this. Why would you make an 8 year old "cope with commuting?"

N10mummy · 03/05/2020 16:21

Are you daughters currently at the school?

Not sure you understood the post.
She would be going on the school coach - she’s not going to be commuting by normal bus or train herself?! And it would be for the exact same reasons that thousands of prep school children take a school coach from areas quite some distance to the likes of eg, Habs, NLCS, etc. Top 30 schools are a privilege as the opportunities they offer are substantial.
I simply wanted to know what impact the extra travelling had or whether after a period of time, they get used to it. Many kids are known to absolutely love going on the school bus and the camaraderie they have with their friends outside of school and in the absence of parents for that short time.
We love the school and think it offers the right balance of opportunity for our daughter. And as a top 30 independent school in the Uk, it’s not so simple to get into at this stage in primary education.
And you’ll see that I confirmed we intended to move up to the area but in this current climate where no one can visit any homes, selling our property and buying another wouldn’t be possible before the start of term.

Didn't take up offer, went for selective state (of which there are several and excellent in North London). The travel just seems a catastrophic waste of time.

It's a long journey for an 8 year old and are you sure that 12 minute car journey will take that long in traffic? Also will she be able to fully participate in all the after school clubs a prep might offer if she has to get on the school bus?

My ds had a similar journey in Year 7 before we moved and it was very tiring. Plus factor in driving for parties, which might be in the opposite direction to school, school events, plays, music concerts etc. There are lots of these at primary level.

Thank you for your helpful reply. I think because I would be driving totally against the traffic and it being 7.15am, I believe the journey would be around 12 mins. But you’re right, it’s something I’ve thought about and it is admittedly making me anxious.

Is it a school that goes to 18? Can she try for 11 or 13+ entry? If it isn't that competitive then I'd wait until you're able to move. There is a poster on the elevenplusexams forum called Daogroupie who is a font of all knowledge on independent and state schools in that area. Look under the talk forums for North London/Herts and you'll see their posts. You could even post yourself as I'm sure there'll be someone there who has considered a similar scenario.

@N10mummy, we knew a few girls that did the journey from Palmers Green, Cockfosters and other areas in North London. They all started at 11 and couldn't wait to leave at 16. The commute was too much. We also know girls at or have gone to NLCS from N10 & N8, parents have all loved it, but admit in hindsight the commute was too long. One of mine has a long commute, but can get to school on the tube. I wouldn't move, because all of these academic schools have a habit of managing girls out for whatever reason.
Have you considered the following?
Channing
Highgate
St Christopher's
All equally academic.

N10mummy · 04/05/2020 19:22

I have considered Channing and Highgate yes but I much prefer STAHS. And the other two don’t have an opening at this point. I’m not happy with her current school at all and it won’t be preparing her in any way shape or form for the 11+. Not interested in St Christopher’s which I know to be an excellent school but not for me.

Thank you for your insight though! Very much appreciated.

That's a long old commute. People do go to Habs from MH but there is a more direct bus. Is it worth it for STAHS? Is it that good a school?

Hersetta427 · 11/05/2020 15:37

That's much too long a day at that age. Poor kid will be shattered. Maybe for secondary age but too young at the moment.

bombaychef · 11/05/2020 23:34

I can't believe you are even considering it
