In-year applications/moving schools in 2020?

More of a support thread than anything else!
DS needs a new mainstream school as he was excluded and is currently in a PRU. He has made great strides and we were due to look round schools the week before lockdown.
We cannot move him sight unseen to a new school but it will be ages before we can see a new school and get to look round; then he'll need to transition.
A bit easier for some but just wanted to check in with anyone else in this position, have you been able to look round schools, are you moving house, have you got a place already, are you going to have to move sight unseen? I assume a school with a place would let you take it without seeing it!

In our area in-year admissions are frozen except for emergency moves for key workers. Schools are not allowed to have show rounds either.

I can see that the transition back will also make in-year appeals harder to win for parents as there used to be guidance tgat said classrooms required 2 sq metres per child but this was removed a good few years ago. If they starting considering space more seriously none of our classes would be above 30 in our Trust schools

Good luck with your son moving back to mainstream. I hope if works out for him, even if it might take longer than planned.

I did wonder what would happen if we just sent his EHCP round and said "you'll take him, won't you?" but it sounds like they'd say "computer says no".

You need to go back to the LA because the point of a PRU is what has happened to your child. There is significant improvement such that they can then move back to a mainstream school. It sounds as though you are "stuck in the middle" at the moment, so I would get back to the LA and ask them how you can move forward.
Having said that it is not the easiest of times to visit schools. Some schools are open for key workers's children so it is possible that with the help of LA people you might at least be able to see the school.

I did ask some time ago if we could visit if the school was partially open and was told no way, no how by one and perhaps by another. I think we might wait till DS is in school a bit more as I don't think they'd attempt a transition until things are fully open anyway - even if he's ready.
