Do they tend to do it in short 20/30 min sittings then have a play then come back and do more ?

Tutor here. I think that is a great idea as many of them will find it hard to concentrate for longer periods.

Hi tutor, Sorry i thought I was writing this one in one thread, but
Ds seem to be doing well with maths for year one
Knows most of his time tables
Can do division
Interested in science things

But he does not enjoy sitting down writing much
So I’m just wondering what general things they are expected to be able to do by end of year one

Your best bet is to buy an inexpensive workbook for that year and see from that. CGP do some good ones. Year 1 is very focused on phonics and making sure they know the main phonemes and can decode words with them.

I tired that bit out of stock, I tired to get the ks1 cgp English

His reading is very good and he knew all his phonics before reception, from jolly phonics

It’s just he doesn’t like to sit and write

Sounds like he is way ahead of the majority of tear 1, so I wouldn’t worry!

Lardlizard · 01/04/2020 19:38

I think he is with maths, and possibly with reading
But it’s just getting him to sit there and write, I wonder if he lacks patience to sit ?

I’m a Y1 teacher. It’s very different at school to home. At school they work in roughly one hour slots but you make sure there are lots of short tasks. So, ten minutes on the carpet then ten minutes doing a task etc.
At home just do what you can! Plenty of breaks and time to play. I’m not against using bribery with my own DC Grin eg reading time also happens to be snack time - no reading, no snack!
By the end of Y1 they should be able to write in sentences that make sense with okay handwriting and phonetically plausible spelling eg scool is fine for school because it’s a sensible guess. I wouldn’t labour the writing thing though, keep it purposeful eg writing notes to relatives or shopping lists or something.

Lardlizard · 01/04/2020 19:41

What do they do on this mysterious carpet time though ? What even is that ?

He had a twinkle print out from school where he had to describe a building, and he was purposefully miss describing it !!
Describing it as ugly and plain when it clearly wasn’t

He’s on turquoise on the oxford reading tree, so doing ok with reading I think ?

What do they do on this mysterious carpet time though ? What even is that ? That really made me laugh Grin We tend to use that time to teach new concepts, assess who can access the lesson and sum up what we’ve learnt. So we might do a few sessions per lesson. You wouldn’t do that at home though!
I wouldn’t worry about him purposefully doing it wrong, that just shows a bright child who understands what’s expected of him and wants to play with it just to be difficult! He may not have enjoyed that task which is fair enough. I’d let him write about things that interest him and just forget about anything he’s bored with. It is much easier to motivate a whole class because they copy their friends, much harder to motivate one child on their own.

VashtaNerada · 01/04/2020 20:01

We don’t use Oxford Reading Tree at my school so I haven’t got a clue about that I’m afraid! He sounds like he’s doing fine from what you’ve said though.

NerdyBird · 01/04/2020 20:25

Oxford Owls website has some free ebooks and you can select the band. Turquoise is above the typical level for year 1, but no reason why he can't carry on working through the bands.

Lardlizard · 01/04/2020 21:06

Thanks for the explanation esp regarding carpet time ! 🤣
I did change the subject from that building to the dog !! So he ended up doing the task twice
Kind of, so seems like I’m doing what you advise,so I will keep plodding on ! Thank so much for your time, very kind of you Flowers

And thanks for the tip I’ll also keep reading more books on oxford owl

Year 1 teacher here. Writing doesn't always have to be about worksheets. Maybe set up some pencils/ clipboard with paper in the garden so that he has access to those materials without being asked explicitly to sit down and write. Many children find it very hard at this age.
