My Son is in year 2, I’m struggling with what work to concentrate on. Is anybody else? He brought home his practice SATS & scored 36/40 in his reading & 39/60 in his maths. 22/25 in the arithmetic paper & 17/35 in the reasoning paper. What can I do with him to improve his reasoning? I am worried about him getting behind, just to add he is a late August boy, so I always have the worry of him getting behind 😟. Many thanks 😊

I'd get a free Twinkl account (google Twinkl, Corona, UK to get the code), and look at the Y2 SAT support stuff in there.
I've also ordered some work books for my kids - they like CGP, but loads of other brands exist.

Have you talked through the reasoning questions with him to see where his logic is faltering?

TCMcK · 26/03/2020 14:01

Thank you for replying, I printed the reasoning paper off & are going through a few pages each day. Upto now it appears that he didn’t read the questions properly as he seems to know the answers? His TA told me that this was a good score? I have joined Twinkle Smile

I second the White Rose and also classroom secrets reasoning. I think that might be free at the moment too.

He’s comfortably his the expected standard for his maths. The reasoning paper is alway a lot lower and y2 (and y6) teachers aim to get the score as high as possible on the arithmetic as reasoning is such a nightmare.

Don’t forget he’s still two months away from sitting the test. He’s done very well!

BabyMommaDec2012 · 26/03/2020 23:19

Hi - am I missing something here? It’s doubtful that the schools will be opening anytime soon. Surely the SATS (KS1 & KS2) will be cancelled if GCSEs and ALevels have been cancelled?

Bowerbird5 · 26/03/2020 23:39

I would expect so Babymomma.

Give him lots of practical things to do with Maths. Start with baking you could talk about ...” what would happen if we don’t have enough flour?”
Experiment with jelly if you have any. It is cheap. “What would happen if we put 1/2 the amount of water?” Then test it out. Lots of fun so that he gets the idea and then you can progress. If you have a garden plan a new fence. If you are in the car talk about the speed. By asking lots of questions you will stimulate his mind then you can progress.

With reading ask him lots of questions. Look for stories like Emma’s Lamb can he understand inference? If not, talk about the story.

Norestformrz - thanks for that. Could you please send me the hyperlink for the webpage? I’d like to share it with my friends who may not know. Thanks x

55% is usually the minimum score to achieve age related expectations. Remember, schools are not expecting parents to teach anything new. Just a little reinforcement of the areas children have already covered. This should be your main focus. Use words such as explain, prove it, can you add to that. There will be some elements in each test that the teacher will not yet have taught, simply because it's only March.

TCMcK · 27/03/2020 08:43

Thank you for your replies 😊 I know the SATS have been cancelled, I thinks it’s because I’ve been given the mock papers so can see that he struggled with the reasoning paper the most, so want to help him. I will try the websites that you have suggested. I know he’s done well, I’m very proud of him Smile.

Has your school not provided a load of structured work?

My year 2 daughter has a full structure of maths spellings science etc. It’s brilliant, we are just working through that. Challenging but manageable. About 3-4 hours a day in total.

TCMcK · 27/03/2020 09:29

They have sent lots of maths sheets home & a maths test, a spellings book & a literacy project, they may have put a bit of work on a website for us but the website was down yesterday. Will have a look again today. 3-4 hours work? We’re not doing anything like that, maybe 2 hours? Is that enough? He seems to get his work done very quickly Smile

What do you and your child think?

3-4 hours mainly because older brother so she just does when he does plus she’s very competitive and eager! If she wasn’t up for it, I suppose I’d be ok with a couple of hours and then slowly build up

TCMcK · 27/03/2020 22:06

I think 2 hours is probably enough, I even have to break that down. We stop for a break at 11am to listen to the David Walliams ebook & then carry on maybe for another 30 mins & then we stop when we have lunch. My husband then plays a timetables/division/number bond game with him of an evening & then listens to him read Smile I just don’t want him to be behind when he goes back to school.
