Schools shut- will they repeat the year?

Apologies if this already asked but we were discussing this today outside our school.
My daughter is in year 4 .
Now with schools being shut until September ( probably) that’s good 4.5 months of missed education?
What will happen then?
Would they repeat the year 4 again?
I just can’t imagine they would just jump into the following year like this?
Also I’m saddened that my with daughters swimming, her school only has swimming classes in year 4.
She could not swim at all and had a huge fear of water before her lessons started and she was doing really well in those schools lessons with her schoolmates. Now all this is gone and if no school until September, then no more swimming lessons.
I get that she can have normal private lessons, but she had so much fun in her school lesson, I just feel sorry for her..
Anyone has any input what will happen in regards missing a big chunk of school year?

I'm worried about my year 7 child with SEN (adhd and asd). She is already well below where she should be and she is extremely likely to be very resistant to working at home.

All I can do is try my best and hope she doesn't regress too much. It's a very very sad situation but the children are safer staying at home. Her education is going to suffer a lot but I can't see any way around it.

I have a reception child with a speech disorder and other SEN. I'm very nervous she is losing all her intervention for 6 months

It's a worry for every parents individual circumstances. Sen children will also be massively affected by this difficult time. I am hoping that Boris goes into more detail about school closures soon. Whilst he can't say for sure he can at least say if he's pretty certain there's no more school until September, or if he hopes if all goes ok, they can consider opening schools again in mid may/June time. Then they will be shut anyway for summer. He said it's to slow the peak. So with kids not particularly catching it perhaps some strict measures will be put in place. Many have disagreed with me but if we are all in this lock down for 4-6 weeks then hopefully most kids will be healthy and unlikely to be carrying anything. Perhaps then they can return to school under strict rules such as school and home. No sharing food. Staggered breaks and lunches. Constant cleaning the building etc. Continue to keep restaurants and pubs cinemas etc shut. We can only hope something like this is possible.

I really feel for all parents who are worried as I am too. We understand the situation and why this is for the best. But it doesn't take away the natural feelings of sadness we have for our children and this crazy situation they are all in. Yes people are dying and that's a million times worse..... But I just hope our kids can be back where they know (especially the primary aged ones) soon. I hope they get to say goodbye to friends. I hope they get to see their teacher again and do the daily school routine again the way they know how. It's a small thing that's irrelevant in comparison but for them its where they spend most their days. My daughter is 100% happiest at school with her teacher and friends. They have really helped her along and I also will miss seeing the mums in the playground and the teachers in the morning. It's such a friendly school. Good luck to everyone. Xx

As I teacher, I think it highly unlikely that every kid in the country will repeat the year they are in at the moment. They will go to their new year group in September and teachers will have to plan very carefully to ensure that children can catch up with what they missed and progress to learning the content for their year group.

@rc22

Do you think they will possibly go back in June to do the last 7 weeks before summer?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/03/2020 21:23

Based on the fact that the gov are sending out the letters to the very vulnerable asking them to stay at home for 'at least' 12 weeks I'd doubt it. 12 weeks by the end of this week (limit for the letters to arrive) takes us to 19th June. And term finishes on 17th July here.

They shouldn't be telling us to work through our summer holiday if we are currently required to set and respond to work while we are shut.

Although they may change their mind.

You can easily just look online for Y4 stuff.

@rjebgf could you possibly give some links or name some sites please? Thank you

Already concerned about DD in Y2. She has ADHD (going through diagnosis which is now on hold). Specialists have observed her and said she is showing typical signs.

She's already behind, especially in maths. I'm doing what I can, but no way could I get her to sit and work all day even if I wanted to.

Parents aren't teachers, teachers have degrees and are trained on how to explain concepts to children.
