This year at my daughter primary school year R are doing reduce, reuse and recycle world book day as that is there theme. I'm completely stuck and have one week to make something.

Could anyone help with some ideas. It has to be homemade.

If you got any idea please share Smile thankyou xx

What junk can you get together in a week? Use cereal boxes to make playing card designs for Alice in Wonderland? Larger boxes to make a grandfather clock for Tom's midnight garden? Our local newsagents will give you crisp boxes if you ask.

A moment's silence if you will for all the parents who work FT who will be trying to do this in one day, on Saturday, whilst also doing homework, swimming and childcare.

When mine had that I made a dress out of used bubble wrap and then used other rubbish and bits of old fabric stuck all over it.

The principal would be the same using a black sack I would of thought and a milk carton as a hat.

Buy a second hand costume on Facebook. 'reduce reuse recycle'.

sashh · 29/02/2020 07:12

I wrote a 'world book day' book, the costume is a cardboard box.

But the costume was inspired by the little girl's dad reading to her about Pandora.

So a box with holes for the arms, legs and head, or just carry a cardboard box.

HAS TO BE HOMEMADE?? That seems ridiculous. Surely a second hand, originally purchased, costume would be fine and would play into their theme? My DC aren't at school yet, but I'm certain that I won't have the time or inclination to hand make costumes, and the school will be told that quite clearly.

Recycle last year's costume. I hate them adding another layer of complication - what's wrong with "dress as a book character"?

Norestformrz · 29/02/2020 08:36

Sadly World Book Day has become World Dress Up and make the supermarkets and Disney rich day ... totally lost the point of why WBD started. Buy a book instead of a tatty costume!

lorisparkle · 29/02/2020 08:53

What about using an old pillow case. We had a white one that I used for an Egyptian costume.

I used two large circles of card And loads of toilet rolls on string to make a 'Mr Tickle'

An old table cloth became Gandalf

A red pillow case became the base for a knights costume, a kings costume, a Viking costume.

I really like this as a theme - it gives you complete free reign to do absolutely anything except for go to Asda and spend seven quid on a polyester Alice costume. You could even buy an Asda costume from the charity shop as long as you pinned the Save The Children price tag on it.

It’s so broad ranging that you should probably start by a) asking your DD for her five favourite books or b) walk round the house/dive through the dressing up box/drop into the local charity shop and see what ideas it sparks.

In your situation I would absolutely have sent them in the Griffindor Quidditch robes which I bought at an NCT sale and used for every possible WBD from ages 5 to 13 (that’s the nice thing about Quidditch robes, they’re one size fits all).

See if any friends kids have costumes from previous and do swaps. Nobody will be buying anything new and you will all be reusing.

rc22 · 01/03/2020 14:48

Previous years that should have said.

At the school I teach in, we are doing The Day the Crayons Quit as the theme. Children just have to wear a coloured t shirt. And same colour trousers if they have them (blue/ black if not). We are in one of the most deprived wards in Britain, so we don't want to add any stress for parents or have any children left out....

Wish my kid's school was doing something similar though - I have spent half of Sunday drawing lines on a pink tshirt for my daughter's Superworm costume because KS1 kids at her school are to be Julia Donaldson themed!!

AssangesCat · 02/03/2020 16:40

Brilliantly, my son's school have asked us all to donate old costumes today and they're offering them back for free in a couple of days, plus one day after school they're opening up a room full of craft materials if people want to come in and make stuff.

Those of us with children in Primary 7 will be world book day-ing for the final time and can have a massive clear out, and hopefully save someone down the school a few quid.
