DD terrified of the biscuit thief

DD is in Reception class. Today their teacher showed them a video of a man dressed in dark clothing breaking into their classroom and stealing the teachers biscuits. Apparently he cut his finger and she saw the blood. She has been absolutely terrified this evening, crying and shaking and saying she is too scared to go to bed in case he breaks into our house. I've told her that her teacher probably made a pretend video to help them with their learning (which I am assuming is true!) Has anyone else's child seen this at school and been scared by it?

Sounds weird. Have you tried speaking to other parents to see what it was about.

LIZS · 26/02/2020 20:13

I would question her version and ask teacher what she may mean

ThePlantsitter · 26/02/2020 20:15

Aw this is cute. Poor DD. I would pretend to ring the teacher and have her say it was made up to help them learn so she can go to sleep, and then find out the story tomorrow (or not, if it's blown over).

NChangeForNoReason · 26/02/2020 20:21

I've seen other posts on MN about primary schools doing this. It's to teach them about detective things (not sure exactly but deffo had a purpose!). They are usually told at the end of the day that it was a hoax. Did they then have a lesson about it?

Perhaps they will tell them tomorrow it's all ok?!

BillieEyeFish · 26/02/2020 20:22

Oh bless her. They’re probably trying to inspire their writing, wanted posters, reporting what happened and putting the clues together to work out who is was, crime scene investigation etc. I bet it ends up leading to another staff member’s drawer.

Tonight you could Read out a fake email from her teacher confirming that is was all the pretend.

It's probably something related to this

ladyflower23 · 26/02/2020 20:34

I've just told her that I've read on the internet that it's a pretend video that teachers make to help the children learn their topic and it's meant to be fun. She now believes me it's not real and has finally let me put her to bed. She said it she was so scared she wanted to look away but couldn't! I'll see if she mentions it in the morning and if still upset I'll talk to her teacher about it. She said they made a poster afterwards to help find the thief. Literally have never seen her so scared about anything! I've whatsapped another parent but not heard back yet. Maybe there will be a queue of parents outside the classroom tomorrow with baggeyed children!

Does your Dad's school teach literacy through Talk 4writing? This sounds like the 'hook' which is intended to engage the children in the theme of the text that they will be studying and using add s basis for their own stories.

Caaarrrl · 26/02/2020 20:58

DD's school obviously! Stupid autocorrect

ladyflower23 · 26/02/2020 21:03

I don't know if they use Talk4Writing but it does sound like this is what they are doing. Other mum has come back to say she's been told that they are going to be setting up a crime scene and trying to solve the mystery then a policeman will be coming to speak to them at the end of the week. Apparently her child wanted her to sleep with her last night and refused to talk about the video and that some other parents had said their children had been worried. They are only 4 and 5 years old so maybe the teacher should have told them from the start that it was all for pretend.

They sound too young for that. My 4 year old would be worried I think.

BiarritzCrackers · 26/02/2020 21:24

I think those activities are meant to be for older primary, not Reception. My DS would have been frightened too, at that age. Seems a bit odd that a teacher used to that age group thought it was a good idea - I know guess some children would be okay with it, but an awful lot wouldn't.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 26/02/2020 22:17

Can't stand all this nonsense. Just too much for some children, however old they are.

And I'm a teacher.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 26/02/2020 22:21

My dds class did something similar but it was about a baby dragon that had ‘trashed’ the classroom. They were shown a video and they all completely believed it.

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 27/02/2020 13:34

Very odd op, my DC's school once did a mystery theme, they pretended the head teacher's big chair from his office had been stolen. However it was very obviously a joke and all the 'suspects' were other members of staff. I can't imagine them mocking up an actual break in.

ladyflower23 · 27/02/2020 16:26

So it turns out that DDs teacher had told them that the thief was another teacher that they knew before they watched the video so the kids wouldn't be scared. I don't think this info sank in for all of them because DD thought it was a bad man and her teacher told me that some other parents had spoken to the her today to say that their children had been scared. Anyway they solved the mystery today and so now DD thinks it's funny because she knows it's someone she knows and that they are a kind person who won't be breaking into our house at night! Teacher said they would be rethinking about how they do things like this in future so glad I spoke up.
