My daughter has just enjoyed reading the Julia Donaldson Songbirds series alongside school books and I'd like to buy something to follow on ... so stage 6/bookband orange +. Recommendations please!!
Please note .. we get books from school, use library, don't have good enough technology to access oxford owl, have lots of other books that we read together. I'm purely looking for a levelled set of books because it's easy to pick one out when I need one.
Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure it's strictly speaking part of a reading scheme but my son, who was a bit bored with scheme books but not yes ready for chapter books, loved the Dr Seuss book set. I enjoyed them to!

As you already visit the library this may not help very much but we subscribe to Reading Chest which sends us banded reading books in the post.

Teddyreddy · 23/02/2020 09:23

Usborne does various reading library collections. We have the first one which would be too easy for you, but there are subsequent ones e.g. this one www.amazon.co.uk/Usborne-Second-Reading-Library-Collection/dp/B00RZFYEIW?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 .

The books have their own levels but you can also check how they map onto book bands here usborne.com/browse-books/reading-level-and-age/book-bands/ .

My son really liked the Project X Alien Adventure books - the Book People sell series 1 and 2. They start at level 7 and end on level 14.

greathat · 23/02/2020 14:57

Yes check out book people they do recommendations by age

itshotterthanthesun · 23/02/2020 15:03

Like @Teddyreddy, the Usborne sets are a good set and have some puzzles/activities in the back of each one. We then just moved onto our DD reading her picture books like the Gruffalo/going on a bear hunt herself.

Thank you! Book people order going in :)

We found the 'reading chest' subscription invaluable when my ds were younger. They loved the books arriving in the post and it was good to have a variety of books. They also enjoyed the project x books, then onto some 'early reader' books.

Unfortunately both my kids have really liked these. I've loathed every single minute spent seeking out the fragments of excrement with their flipping micro watches which only work at certain plot points!

I tried to negotiate a deal with the class teacher that she didn't move the kids up book bands so I didn't have to endure the next batch of them!

There are a few different tiers of the "early reader" books that increase in difficulty if you want some different range but slightly "levelled"

scissy · 24/02/2020 14:51

My DD also loves the Project X alien adventures (which feature Nok the alien and a group of kids). There's 2 sets, one for lower reading levels and the 2nd set which goes all the way up to (simple) chapter books. My DD begs the TA for these first at each stage Wink. I like sci-fi so I prefer them to Biff, Chip and Kipper!

Bellesavage · 25/02/2020 15:11

I have these for my DD who has just finished songbirds. They go from orange to white I think and I reckon she'll be set for chapter books after working her way through these

At that age my DD liked books that weren't from school reading schemes she liked unicorn diaries (They were from branches scholastic books), dragon masters series was also a hit. They're like mini chapter books but super easy to read.

Cuddleandachat · 25/02/2020 18:06

I agree with Kuponut. The books are just on the right shelf for their book band. The children do not even read the Project X alien adventures in the right order. I coped with the Project X books on the lower book bands but the alien ones were just too much.

Red topped Early Readers from the library are a good option. Mine have also read Sainsbury's Colour Readers and Reading Ladder books. They are written by well known writers so are well written and quite interesting.

CruCru · 26/02/2020 10:51

Realistically if the OP is buying the books, her child will read them in order.

Bellesavage · 26/02/2020 11:22

@scissy are the characters boys and girls I the project X books? I've noticed my DD isn't at all interested in books where the main character is a boy, but a lot of the books with female leads are all about rainbow sparkles and unicorns Hmm

scissy · 26/02/2020 13:09

There's 1 girl, an ethnically diverse range of 3 boys, a robot and a blue alien (the robot only appears once they've started jetting off into space). The girl is the "scientific" one. I'd rather it was more a bit more even, but it was written a while ago now so you can't have everything.

Sallybikes · 27/02/2020 19:57

@Bellesavage - they sound great but are unfortunately sold out!

Thanks again everyone for your responses. I've ordered some project x ones and will make a note of others to look out from the library.

Sign up to Reading Chest. They are wonderful.

You can choose fiction, non fiction or which series you’d prefer. There are so many books.
