Dyslexia in primary school?

Hi all!
At the University of Leeds we're running a project looking at how easy/difficult dyslexia diagnosis is in primary school.

We're interested to know if you faced any barriers getting a diagnosis for your child and what you recommend to remove these barriers in future.

If you're the parent of a primary aged school child in the UK with dyslexia please consider filling in our short (10 min max) survey and help produe guidance for the future.

Thank you in advance! I'm happy to answer any questions Smile

I'm in Scotland and the LS teacher has assessed and diagnosed my child, she told me she does this now as there is only 1 educational psychologist for the entire local authority area (city so hundreds of schools) It did take 5 years before anyone took me seriously as her work was 'within normal range for her age' It didn't seem to occur to anyone that it wasn't in keeping with the rest of her ability and the fact she could read well was through sheer hard work and determination. Her have a go attitude held her back from getting support over children that had the ability but not the confidence

This is why teachers need training

Well, seeing as the government don’t seem to care if teachers are even qualified as teachers in our academies, I can’t imagine any specific training in dyslexia is going to forthcoming any time soon.

I’ve long lost faith in the state school system, and yes it is diabolical. Like others have posted; I was flagging up dyslexic issues with our eldest daughter for years, and it was not until we sought a private assessment, that this was confirmed. She had developed her own coping strategies, although still had very obvious signs, which numerous teachers dismissed over and over again.
Likewise with our youngest daughter, and for different reasons...gifted but relatively slow processing. Not one teacher throughout her early primary years, recognised anything unusual. She was to them..just an average child, continuously placed in the ‘middle’. At times I felt so helpless at their complete indifference to our child. Paid for a detailed EP report, which was beyond astounding. I felt so angry at being fobbed off for so many years by these young ‘professionals’ half my age, who clearly didn’t have a clue. As a professional in my own field, we would not get away with such incompetence, yet there is no accountability where teaching our children is concerned. At least now with private education, we have a voice that listens.
