Extra time for KS2 SATS?

My DS's teacher told me last week that they are applying for extra time for him for the SATS in May. I did ask if this was for specific reasons, however she said no, but just that he would benefit from having extra time. Afterwards it occurred to me that this felt a bit odd - would they be able to apply if there were not specific reasons/learning difficulties? On the other hand I am also a parent of a DD with severe dyslexia, and a DS with complex needs, so maybe I am reading too much into it!

My DS scored 102-106 in his mocks, so working at the expected level, which I was very happy with. He has no identified additional needs. He has had issues with anxiety in the past but this is currently well managed and not causing any issues.

Any thoughts/experiences would be much appreciated.

Well, everyone would benefit from additional time, so that's not a reason! To make a successful application, he must meet the criteria, specifically slow processing speed. It would be unusual to have no prior indications that this would be a problem. I would ask further!

In addition to the point made above, extra time would also have to be part of his normal classroom practice. For example, they should be giving him additional time to complete his classwork because he is unable to finish successfully within the normal time. If they aren't doing this, and/or he doesn't genuinely meet the application criteria, then it's maladministration and would constitute 'cheating' on the part of the school.

Which is RIFE, btw. You are right to be suspicious. Take it further and ask which one of the specific criteria they imagine think he meets.

Thank you all, and it's good to see that you also think it rather odd. I will obviously speak to the teacher once they are back next week, but good to have some pointers in the meantime.

As far as I’m aware It can just be applied if their reading speed is below a certain threshold (less than 90 words a minute I think). The school will have evidence to prove why extra time has been awarded and if an invigilator turns up they will examine the evidence. Odd that they haven’t been upfront as to why extra time is being given though?

I agree with PP, it is very odd that his teacher hasn't given you a specific reason for the extra time application.
