Maths for 7 year old

I’m struggling to keep calm when explaining things to DD7.
We play lots of maths games, she has work books, she plays hit the button/top marks games on her tablet. One minute she will sail through several questions, explain what she is doing and get them right. Then all of a sudden it’s like she just forgets everything and for example starts adding 50p and 20p and coming up with 60p. I just don’t understand how one minute she can do it unaided then the next she just doesn’t seem to get it at all and when I try asking how she reached that number she said “there are two 10’s in 20, so that gives you 30”? She can count up in 20,10,5 and 2 to 100 so I’m struggling to work out how her brain suddenly just stops functioning Confused

She's only 7!

Time of day, tiredness, hunger etc can all impact concentration.

Give her a break, if she can do it sometimes the knowledge is there, the consistency will come.

I know she is only 7 but she has gone from being in year one and working at above the expected to level to being in year 2 and forgetting the basics. Her teacher has basically said sometimes she has concerns about the standard of work she produces, especially as they know how well she was doing before.

I’d back off a bit. You sound a bit stressed about it and she’ll pick up on this.

She’ll pick it up.

I would be glad shes already 7 in yr 2. My dc wasnt till the end of the year. Being on the older side may have inflated her to exceeded.
My yr3 work is still very up and down (illness mainly then tiredness/overexcited etc).
Mine couldnt do add/sub in yr 2 - due to the ridiculous only methods of jumping to the answer, but still managed to pass the SATs. So is obviously finding yr 3 much easier.
Just keep working on it at home.

My dd used to be exactly like this. One minute I was amazed by how well she picked up maths and the next I was wondering why she could not understand something so obvious. I agree with how easily children pick up on stress. If she is not getting something, just quickly show her the right solution, comment on how she is doing well or will get it next time and then stop. With maths, if they leave it a while and come back to it, the subconscious works on it and it becomes easier.

Keep it fun and stop when she wants to stop and she will get there.

My dc was really good with numbers, but some how struggled with money. Things that helped was using a real thing.
Doing lots of online work is one thing, but using everyday object to get familiar with numbers is another great thing. Introduce numbers in everyday life.
