Hi!

DSD5 (Y1) has asked me to help her come up with 'the best costume ever' for WBD. I know it's a while away but I like to be organised with things. We've been round the shops and seen some of the costumes in the supermarkets but nothing has taken our fancy plus DSD has said 'everyone will get a costume from here'...

So far I've thought off:

  • Katie from Katie in London/Scotland so forth as she's been doing the books at school. So red boots, red mac, jeans and red cardi for when she takes her mac off but then it's 'nothing special' to her normal clothes.
  • Annie; I rag her hair from time to time anyway for gymnastics/dance and she is opposed with the original film but it's not a book Envy
  • Angelina Ballerina; Pinterest showed me how to make a book tutu but I'm not too sure how she would sit down in class? It's totally not practical despite looking so good.

DSD loves reading but has only this week moved away from biff/chip/ no more than 10 page books to a 48 page book today. Her dad and I are both shocked at the length of her newest book but she's read 20 pages seamlessly this evening. That said, it's all illustrations of animals being 'Grandpa' etc.

Please MN share some inspiration and help me sort the 'best costume ever' or even use this thread to help you figure something out for your DC!

What books have you read to her that she has loved?

BarkandCheese · 11/02/2020 17:16

Thinking back to y2 or thereabouts I remember girls going as

Pippi Longstocking
Dorothy from wizard of oz
The girl from the worst witch books (Mabel?)
Matilda
A “thing” from cat in the hat
Little Miss Sunshine
A Dalmatian (101 Dalmatians)

Gangster granny

DD at that age did cat from owl and the pussycat. Black top, black leggings, fashioned a tail from an old pair of tights and a £1.50 mask from hobby craft. That was the only costume we made. The rest of the time we have done 'normal' human characters, so she wears the requisite colour top and skirt/ trousers and does hair in the style. Cheaper, less faff and she doesn't look ridiculous and it's comfortable and practical. Boring I know, but no one remembers amazing costumes and I certainly wouldn't pay for a costume

Changemyname18 · 11/02/2020 20:03

'Best costume ever is what you make It, and it being a character significant to her. Not something worthy of the masked singer that cost forty quid and took until 3an to get it right. You'll remember that in years to come. At her age, she won't.

We've done Matilda, Alice in wonderland, paddington, the midnight Gang, Harry Potter, pippi long stocking all fairly easily.

What is she into? The best costume I saw one year was mog . The girl had hair chalk in messy pony , face paint, colour pens on a white t shirt

My 5 yo Yr1 DD is going as the Princess in Black in a black superhero outfit. Her request as its her favourite book at the moment. Actually I would recommend that series for your daughter as a good first chapter book for her to read.

I try and cobble as much together from existing clothes as possible. I made the cape. and DD is making the belt herself. We had to buy gloves though (99p from ebay).

I agree with the character coming from your DD and her interests.

Muddlingalongalone · 12/02/2020 22:51

Dd1's favourite costume was little miss chatterbox. She drew & I cut out a cardboard sandwich board type contraption & she coloured it in.
What about little red riding hood or goldilocks??

Leeds2 · 12/02/2020 23:05

My DD went as Little Red Riding Hood, and took in a basket of cookies to share at break time, which was popular!
Any cat should be possible.
A witch, such as Meg from Meg and Mog, or Worst Witch.
Have seen a few Cat In The Hat's in my time!

ritzbiscuits · 12/02/2020 23:05

What is her favourite book/character? I'd encourage her to choose off her bookshelf and start from there.

If she likes ballet, Angelina Ballerina is a good one. Sainsbury's sell pink tutus very reasonably, and shed then get a play outfit out of it too.

hels71 · 13/02/2020 20:52

My Dd once went as Saucepan man from the faraway tree books. I printed off saucepan puctures, laminated them then sewed them in to her clothes

BlueChampagne · 14/02/2020 12:37

DS2 is 10 and wants to go as the Very Hungry Caterpillar because it means he can go to school in a green sleeping bag ...

Nicpem1982 · 15/02/2020 16:10

Dd is going as lady Miranda from the pug series.

She's wearing normal clothes but taking her cuddly pug in a sea captains outfit.as her favourite book it captain pug

CruCru · 15/02/2020 16:54

Please don't buy a new costume, unless she will definitely get a lot of wear out of it on other days. It's yet more expense and waste - this sort of thing makes parents dread WBD, even if they are quite well off. Are there any Roald Dahl characters she likes? Could she go as Hermione / Mildred from the Worst Witch (if you have a witch's costume)?

missl1 · 17/02/2020 20:23

I've seen a great Matilda at our school. Also Winnie the Witch is pretty easy. Make the hat out of cardboard, buy some stripy tights, and wear lots of necklaces and mismatched clothing.
