Male Teachers at Primary Level

Hi Folks,

I am just enquiring and interested in Public opinion on this matter. I am a guy who is currently looking at doing my PGCE and QTS in September. As a guy I am wondering what your opinions are of having male teachers in the classroom. Do you have experience of such? Do you have male primary teachers in your DD'S school?
Most of what I have read from such related articles is from many years ago and I'm just looking for an upto date and current opinion. I would appreciate all views positive and negative (as I know there may be some) but I want a rounded view of public opinion. Thanks a lot.

My DC's teacher is male. Teaches reception and is a Maths specialist. He's great and seems popular with all the children and parents.

Think he's about 4 years qualified or so.

Primary schools definitely need more good male role models.

PeterPomegranate · 10/02/2020 17:37

There are quite a few male teachers at my sons’ primary school, mainly in key stage 2. I see it as a positive to have a diversity of teaching staff.

PeterPomegranate · 10/02/2020 17:38

Actually, not only KS2 - one of the Reception teaching assistants is a man, which I do think is fairly unusual but fantastic!

Musicalstatues · 10/02/2020 17:39

There are only 2 male teachers and one ta in my dc’s school. I wish there were more!

Ostanovka · 10/02/2020 17:40

I'd really appreciate a good male role model for my children.

PurpleDaisies · 10/02/2020 17:41

Schools will absolutely fall over themselves to employ you.

You will only need to be vaguely competent to have parents fawning all over you about how amazing you are.

You have nothing to worry about. Apart from doing the job which is pretty difficult at the months.

PurpleDaisies · 10/02/2020 17:41

Moment not months.

There are a fair few male teachers and TAs in my DD school. Just found out today her teacher is dating the other one in her year (hers is the woman), apparently he's also been out with another female teacher in the school so that's an advantage I hadn't thought of too.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/02/2020 17:42

When I was looking round schools to find yr3 dd a new primary school the male, dreadlocked teacher at one school swung it for me. He was a breath of fresh air. Dd loved her year in his class.

My brother is a primary TA and as far as I know has never had any Issues.

HerRoyalFattyness · 10/02/2020 17:43

My DD has selective mutism.
One of the very few people she speaks to in school is the male eyfs teacher.
She adores him. And he's a great role model to young children.
I'm of the opinion that the more positive male role models children have the better.

literalsunshine · 10/02/2020 17:43

There's are 2 male teachers at the school I work at, one in ks1 and one in ks2, we also have 2 male Ta's, they are all really respected by staff, children and parents.

Mallysmomma · 10/02/2020 17:44

We need more male teachers!!! I’m chair of the pta and a parent governor so very involved in my DS’s school so am very vocal on this. Last year we had three male teachers and they all left this year to move to different parts of the country. I was sad as one of them was an amazing year 6 teacher that my nieces and nephew all had and I was looking forward to him having my DS in his class next year as his class is quite rowdy and they need a firm hand. We still have two male TA’s who are both amazing and one male member of the SLT. Go for it. X

Flyingarcher · 10/02/2020 17:44

You will be snapped up. Men are really needed at primary level.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 10/02/2020 17:45

Absolutely will be easier - everyone will think you're amazing if you're even half decent.

And rather worringly but sadly the case - much easier steps to promotion Hmm

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 10/02/2020 17:45

There are no male teachers at my current school but it’s only small. Larger schools I’ve taught at have had several male teachers as does my youngest’s primary.

It will be a definite advantage being male in primary. Good luck!

PurpleDaisies · 10/02/2020 17:45

That was surely because he was a good teacher, not because he was male though?

eeyore228 · 10/02/2020 17:48

We have a few male teachers. Really good teachers who care about what they teach the children.

PurpleDaisies · 10/02/2020 17:50

Again, that’s not linked with them being male though. That’s them being good teachers.

When I was at primary I had male teachers until I was in the last year.
I know there is a disproportionate ratio of female:male teachers so as others have said, go for it.

AnduinsGirl · 10/02/2020 17:56

Have to say, it drives me crackers how quick people are to say "you'll be snapped up," etc. Any school worth their salt would only ever employ the best person for the job; male or female! I've worked with some fabulous male teachers and TAs but also some complete idiots who came in ready to tell us all where we've been going wrong and how they're planning to be a head in 5 years...
Best of luck to you OP, good teachers of both sexes are desperately needed!

Theworldisfullofgs · 10/02/2020 17:57

You will find it easier to get a job than any of your female colleagues. Please be good as well. (School governor here)

PurpleDaisies · 10/02/2020 17:59

Well, unfortunately that’s not what happens in the real world. We’ve had some crap men promoted ahead of very competent women and some very suspicious hiring of rubbish male teachers in a field of impressive female ones.

Theworldisfullofgs · 10/02/2020 17:59

And I agree with Anduinsgirl. It shouldn't be the case that you get favourable treatment over women. You will though.

(We would only employ you if you were good)
