Let down by school

Hey mums

Just need some advise and second opinions,

My son is in year 1 and I’ve just find out that most of his Class has been getting a second book to read at ( The big cat books) home since September which basically helps them learn to read, when I asked the teacher she said that he should of been getting it and she was confused as to why not, then I asked the assistant teacher again she said she had no idea why he was not getting it! After chasing and running after the teachers for two week I finally managed to get it.

I also had a meeting with the head teacher yesterday as the teacher had no answers for me, she was shocked and said she is going look into it.

There is at least 10 kids in the same position

It has really upset me that he wasn’t given the opportunity and the fact that the teachers was not even aware of it.

I feel I have let my child down for not knowing(he is my first child) I feel let down by the teachers and the schools and we are nearly two term in to the year.

Do you think I should move my child to another school now or wait for few more weeks to see anything going to change then decided?

Any advise is welcomed, thank you for your time

Op are you already considering tutoring as please don’t push your child in year 1. Let him be and enjoy school

How long was your meeting? It sounds as if you were simply asked to put your concerns in writing, rather than take up time.

Maybe something brief

Thank you for our conversation earlier. I realise on reflection that this may have been less of an issue than I had first thought and thank you for taking time to listen. However, as you requested confirmation in writing, my concerns related to the recent Ofsted assessment of the school and how the school plans to address issues raised and the system of ensuring all year 1 pupils are fully accessing the reading scheme. I look forward to receiving any further reassurance you can provide and will discuss ds progress in reading with Class Teacher.

Kind regards

Blimey! Just take him to the library and let him choose books he likes the look of. Or buy some book people collections and let him plough through them.

Unless he has a specific issue with reading it's just a case of reading to him, having him practise at home (with whatever books he can manage and enjoys) and just keeping it fun.

wow
thinking of changing schools over a bloody 2nd book how rediculous
a few of our kids take school books home that never see the school again they vanish and the parents moan that there kids dont read with them
buy your own books or go to the library if your that bothered, reading is reading whatever they read ie comics, books, shopping lists

OP you sound like a nightmare

Underhiseye2 · 08/02/2020 20:13

We have always supplemented the school books. Whether its 1 or 2 makes very little difference. Whether its 2 or 7 does. You just need to step up your game overall. Get to the library or look on book people.

Blimey I would be delighted if my DC got one book - they are so young they need to play after school not do hours of learning.

DustCentral · 08/05/2021 15:34

Massive over reaction. Wow.
If you’re reacting like this at an extra book not coming home in year 1, you’re in for a stressful next decade or more.

JackANackAnoreeee · 08/05/2021 15:53

It's annoying but does seem ike a massive over reaction. If you ask on facebook market place there'll be collections of reading books people have sitting at home to sell for cheap, or local librariesare beginning to open. Most people supplement school books with other material anyway.

Dustyhedge · 08/05/2021 18:59

Don’t send the email. The first paragraphs are nonsensical and then you sound completely ott asking for work plans for tutoring etc. You can probably do a few lines saying something like:

As per our discussion, I am writing to confirm that there has been an issue with reading book distribution but I understand it is now being rectified and the teachers are aware.
