I'm just trying to judge where my son is at, he was a little ahead when he started school but I'm not sure if it has changed much.
He had help with the commas and 'armour' but the rest he done by himself including spellings.
Thank you

Advanced but within normal range

MinkowskisButterfly · 12/01/2020 23:01

I don't think it is (not being mean) but my reception age child writes like that and based on the christmas cards she received from her class friends a large proportion can write like that.

Kneehighinshit · 12/01/2020 23:01

Considering he is using split digraphs independently (have) which usually isn't taught until way into year 1 phonics. Then yes it is advanced.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 12/01/2020 23:15

I'd say it's more like end of reception than beginning of reception so yes a bit ahead.

cabbageking · 12/01/2020 23:35

I would expect higher ability Reception children to be producing this.

But it depends if this is independent work and if spelling help is verbal or written.

They have covered full stops, finger spaces, capital letters and sounding out the words this term. Some are well into it and a couple are still practising their names.

CripsSandwiches · 12/01/2020 23:37

I would say it was good but unexceptional. There were a few with writing better than that in both my DC's reception class but it would definitely be above average within their cohort.

Luzina · 12/01/2020 23:38

It is certainly way ahead of either of mine at that stage, they both couldn't read until mid to end year 1. Hasn't held them back though, both did well from yr 3. Kids seem to develop in fits and starts.

My DC school even the most able wouldn’t be close to this. They haven’t been taught most of the phonics in this work (I chose it because it’s pretty okay based). As a teacher, I’d say even for a RWI school or similar it’s year 1 level.

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 13/01/2020 00:13

Play based

user1471449295 · 13/01/2020 00:17

Agree with top end of normal range

Howmanysleepsnow · 13/01/2020 00:20

Better than my August born year 2, but he’s behind!

Awkward1 · 13/01/2020 12:07

I dont think have is a split diagraph?
More like a 'tricky word'. It's h-a-v
I think ae would make a different sound maybe like in m-ae-k (ay)

The writing just looks similar to dc class. Probably more advanced words etc.
I would use lined paper though.

But a lot would depend on his age too.
My dc could hardly write anything at this stage and it was some backwards etc. But hit the eyfs by the May and has continued to meet expectations(now y2).

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 13/01/2020 20:25

If you don’t think that’s changed much from when he started then he was more than a little ahead when he started. The spelling is what really marks it out as advanced for this point in the year.

Lolakath19 · 14/01/2020 08:46

Also depends if it is a September or August born child..

user1493494961 · 15/01/2020 14:35

I would agree with top end of normal.

TulipCat · 15/01/2020 14:40

Looks about right for Reception.

SympatheticSwan · 15/01/2020 20:00

It is very good. Better than my DC who is in Y1 actually.

Donkeykong2019 · 15/01/2020 20:07

My reception aged child can't even write her name or really get the concept of what a sentence is yet so well ahead of mine. She is November born

Marcipex · 15/01/2020 20:07

It’s the upper end of the range, I’d say, so it’s good but not exceptional.
As pp have said, there’s a lot of variation in Reception.

PPopsicle · 15/01/2020 20:10

Higher end of normal

Out of a class of 30 I might have 5-7 that can write like that

musicinspring1 · 15/01/2020 20:12

I’d say top end of reception too

Poorlyandfedupmum64 · 19/01/2020 14:04

That's fabulous! My DD isn't at this level. She's just starting to write her name and a few letters
