What is your household income? Sorry this is very nosey but I'm just interested. Looking at a GDST school in a london borough(not central) from y5 & hopefully all the way through. Between us we bring home about 130k before tax. Weve done the sums and can afford it plus have some left over but obviously not as much if she was to stay in state. I'm just nosey as to whether we'll be about average or not.

We are on about 170k but in the north. Have two kids though. We have some savings but only a fraction of the overall cost for 2. I've got to say I am now very conscious that we've committed to this massive expenditure and I've suddenly started being very careful with money in a way I never have before.. we have also bought a tent!Grin

I've found quite a mix with the parents. I'm sure you'll be fine.

School fees are now unbelievably expensive. I remembered when I went to school in the 1990s, boarding fees were around 4000-5000 a term. Now, day school fees are around 7000 a term! Shock

£75k income but no mortgage, two kids and 50% off fees. We have two "badged" cars and two big holidays a year.

250 k before tax and inc bonuses and we feel ‘poor’ compared to most at our prep Wink. With 2 kids. I reckon you can do it on 150k joint income for 2 as long as fees are not the higher end.

I’m on my own and my salary is £103K. My daughter is in a North London prep. We’re definitely the poorest there.

£150k pre tax both DDs will be private from next year. So worth it if you can afford it . We are pretty average I would say. The vast majority of parents work very hard to send their DC.

About £120 to 130k. I say “about” as DH is self employed so his fluctuates a lot. We have two DS in a private primary. It’s tight as we also have a large mortgage - £2k per month. DS1 is taking his 11+ later this year for a super selective grammar and I am keeping everything crossed as we know we have to keep DS2 in private education all the way through as he has struggled academically and our local non-selective school is not great. I currently work four days per week so will definitely have to go up to five if they both go to a senior private school. I may also have to go back to London for work as I would get paid a lot more there - I work locally about 40 miles from London at the moment.

Each to there own ...I don’t have children in private school but I have high achieving children that went to state BUT I did work in a very prestigious prep school in Surrey and they learnt exactly the same as my children just in smaller groups.. there are amazing state schools these days..Save your money and go to the Bahamas .

Interestingly OP, I estimate that our income is at the lower end for DS1’s year but towards the higher end on DS2’s year. The latter has a completely different demographic to the first with lots of first generation immigrants who have recently moved out of London and are putting education first before a flash house and car. Those families who were “born and bred” in the area that we live in seem to put it at the bottom of the list and it’s the first thing to go if they get into financial difficulties.
