How can you change (public) school?

My eldest is in Y6 and he has an awful time at his school (he has adhd).
My youngest is in Y3 and recently diagnosed with dyspraxia and sensory needs. The school is jot nurturing one bit and is absolutely rubbish with SEN kids. It is in a well off part of the country and therefore has zero extra funding. In the whole school there is only 2.5 TAs! Things are dire..
How do i change school for my Y3 child? There is a nice nurturing school (therapy dogs, forest school etc..) nearby.
Thanks

When you say public school, do you mean state school/non-fee paying, rather than Public School in the British sense of private, fee paying schools?

If so, you can apply for a place as an in year transfer. Depending on the type of school, you either apply to the Local Authority, or to the school itself (the School or LA should be able to tell you who you need to apply to).

If they have a space in the right year, then it should be yours and it’s a case of making arrangements with the school to start. If there aren’t spaces, then you will go on a waiting list.

To be fair, the UK is particularly strange in calling its private schools public, it makes no sense!

Transfer sounds like a good plan. Talk to either new or current school about funding/strategies they can put in place. Does your child have an ILP?

educated the reason is historical. Back in 18th century Grammar schools opened their doors to the fee paying public, hence the term public.

First thing to do is find out if the school you want has a place for your children. If they do then apply for an in year place via the local authority

Have you been pushy enough with the school? Making sure they support your children appropriately?

Changing schools might not help - schools with a deprived intake get more funding but it’s there for those deprived children. SEN money is separate as far as I’m aware.

I'd be focusing on moving my DC to the nicer school and in the mean time making complaints and escalating them.
