Hi.
My local private school doesnt give financial assistance until p4. Can anyone advise on how to help?
My son is very gifted and we've been advised to put him into a private school. But we cant afford it as i am a carer for my partner who has Ms.
Any help would be so kindly appreciated 😥

What age is your son?
Can you support and extend your son educationally at home for the first few years? There are lots of educational resources available. School is not the only learning environment.

I speak from experience and both my husband and I have supported and stretched our two DSs without private school. They have attended the local state comp (Scottish). One is studying law at Oxford and the younger one (S3) is winning international coding competitions and is reaching the final rounds of maths competitions (UKMT). The school hasn't supported them in achieving this.

Who advised you to look at private school?

I'd say it depends where you live tbh. In our (admittedly limited) experience, the private school(s) near us were no better than the state schools, and the only advantage was social. I believe if you live in Edinburgh or Glasgow though, that may be different.

My point is, you may well find that state is just the very thing - if you find the right state school.

Private schools only take on clever kids that can’t afford the fees when league tables come into play. So there is no funding before p4, and tbh that’s a little early.

Most people state educate in primary then publicly educate from secondary, if you’re into that kind of thing, so I can’t believe your ds is at a disadvantage atm.

Who told you privately educating your primary school son was necessary? In what way is he gifted?
I’m thinking, if he’s truly something to be reckoned with, a support3d education in primary will allow him to sit scholarship exams in secondary.
