5yos behaviour causing problems

My son just started school so is in reception. He has epilepsy & hypermobility. He is extremely bright and soaks information up like a sponge. He started medication for his epilepsy on the 12th of October and its got it well under control, just the odd break through when very tired. Hes a very active child and struggles with anything that requires being still. Hes very sociable and popular.

A couple of times a week I get pulled aside about his behaviour and I'm not sure what to do. It's not every day but it's always at carpet time. Getting up, shouting, making silly noises and having to be sent next door to the other class and today he was threatened with the headteachers office. I asked the teacher if he was allowed a fidget toy at carpet time to perhaps help him join in and she said yes. I've tried incentives which usually work but not today and he was sticking his tongue out when he was being told off.
Do you think this could be medication related? He was always so good at nursery. Hes been in a terrible defiant mood all evening and after school he sat on my lap in the car crying. I don't want him labelled as the naughty boy as hes so lovely and enthusiastic about learning, but when these moods take over hes completely non- compliant.
Hes like it at home sometimes too but mostly hes fine.

My son was on medication for adhd..i was astounded when i was reading the side effects..one being "can cause adhd"...so yes it could be medication related...hes still only young and its early days with regards of settling into school. ..if ds has experienced a few "off days" and been told off this could be contributing to his behaviour..therefore he is going around in a vicious circle...hopefully he will have a successful day with no negativity and lots of praise to get him back in swing of positive behaviour..

Difficult to say OP - could be medication related could just be exhaustion from school and adapting to a new routine and new behaviour management system.

Omg I just read the leaflet again and it says about symptoms of adhd! Ugh I'll speak to school/his Dr and see what they say thank you

Its amazing the amounts of medication that can have this side effect..hopefully chat with doctor and teachers might give some understanding...sounds like your little guy has a lot of positives going on so maybe this just a "hiccup".Smile

How long did preschool expect tjem to sit for?
Did some kids get up
And wander off (ive seen this at my dc one).
If hypermobile he may not be comfortable sitting that long.
I think school can be very different and more tiring. And many kids have probably not previously been going 5 days a week.
Mine can be more defiant after a lot of exercise. So maybe look at which days he is playing up and whether it is after pe or a particular other activity.
Probably the medication but i think i read asd has links with hypermobility and epilepsy.

Thank you. He doesn't have asd, if it was anything it'd be ADHD but I'm not sure if it's just his age or what. With epilepsy he's more prone to autism, ADHD, other SEN and mental health problems. His nurse rang me today for an update and I told her all about what's been happening, she's said if it continues he can change to granules which are slow release and may help with his behaviour. She is going into school on Tuesday to deliver training and meet his teacher so hopefully they can chat about it all too. His teacher said she doesn't mind his fidgeting it's the noises he makes and then yesterday he was getting up at carpet time. I guess we need to give it more time to see what the cause may be. He did have forest school yesterday which may have been why he was so grumpy in the afternoon.

One of things i had to keep an eye on with my ds was his food. You have the obvious foods like fizzy drinks and sweets but the amount of foods that have ingredients that can contribute to behaviours are vast. Surprisingly fish fingers (in breadcrumbs) are to be avoided because E numbers in breadcrumbs. Might be worth having a look at diet as i thought foods that appeared relatively healthy could actually have ingredients that children should avoid..
