Tutors for 7+

Could anyone please recommend a good tutor with experience of winning places at Westminster, Colet Court, Highgate, KCS etc - DS goes to a vey good prep but being summer born and also considering the level of competition, an extra boost would help. He is a clever boy, however, needs help in a few areas particularly around writing. Any recommendations of qualified teachers welcome (and treated in strict confidence). We don't really want a 21 to 25 yr old fresh from University which the agencies are offering but someone who has direct experience in a track record in the area. Ta x

try here. she says on her profile that she has experience getting students into St Paul's, Westminster, Eton, Epsom, Harrow, Francis Holland, Godolphin and Latymer, St Mary's Ascot, King's College, Sevenoaks, Emmanuel, City of London and Wellington.

@IslingtonMum1 I know a good one but she is in NW11 which is probably too far for you if your username is correct! PM me if you do want her details.

ubermum20 · 26/12/2020 14:44

Hi there! I am a mum of a five year old girl, she goes to a state school and would like to help her with tutoring. I have read that you have helped other moms with a few contacts, would be much appreciated if you could share them with me as well please

Thank you for your help

justasmalltownmum · 27/12/2020 17:52

Does anyone know of a recommended east london based tutor please?

The ones mentioned all seem to be north.

Can anyone please share Miss Bloomfield's number?

Hi All - I am preparing my son for the Westminster Under 7+ assessment in Jan (3 weeks to go!). He goes to a state school and has had 2 hr/week group tuitions since April this year. He is doing well in the maths and reasoning papers but really struggles with creative writing. He reads a lot and has a good vocabulary but when it comes to narrative arc, tense consistency, and grammar his work is average. I am trying to prep him with ‘exam papers plus guide to creative writing’ which contains lots of exercises and frameworks but unable to judge if his level of writing will make the cut or which areas to focus on. I am wondering if it is worth getting his writing evaluated by a professional tutor who can provide guidance on what to focus on over the next 3 weeks. I would appreciate any suggestions for resources or tutors who can help! Thank you

FoggySpecs · 14/12/2021 11:42

I would not bother with tutoring for 7 plus, just let your child go somewhere where they are happy and prepare well for 11 plus /common entrance.

Summer born babies haven't yet caught up and it's very stressful for them

sunshineclouds24 · 14/12/2021 11:57

@Archibald33 , you are overthinking this. Let your ds enjoy Christmas and see what happens in Jan. He has done very well to get this far and if he doesn't get an offer it's not the right school for him. As it's 1 of the top performing schools in the U.K. he is going to have a great educational journey ahead regardless of where he ends up.

Archibald33 · 14/12/2021 22:13

Thanks Foggy and Sunshine! He cleared the SPJ written exam few weeks ago but the head teacher felt he didn’t show enough focus/ability to take direction at the internet view stage. So hasn’t been offered a place. To be fair he is late July born and is a bit too young for assessments! I am super proud of him and am sure he’ll do well where he goes but he loves learning so much, I feel these schools will cater to his curiosity and love for learning. Still, take your point about relaxing over Christmas:-)

Lolakath19 · 14/12/2021 22:27

@Archibald33 Hello, if your son cleared the written exam at SPJ that means that he is good enough academically so I would not overthink it for the WUS exam, he is probably ready and by making him work even more during xmas you will just burn him out. Sticking point seems to be on the focus / attention, so I would try to work on this, and explain how it works, needs to be able to sit on a chair, work in group (listen to other ideas as well as share his), be resilient and persevering.

Good luck

sunshineclouds24 · 14/12/2021 22:50

@Archibald33 , your ds will get a love of learning from many prep schools so better to take on board the SPJ feedback and find somewhere that will allow him to develop at his own pace. I'm sure he will gain from the Westminster process but don't fixate on it as you have already been given feedback by a good source. Some of the ds at SPJ will be re-appearing at Westminster so it's the same competition. Do you have another prep school place already in the bag?

Archibald33 · 23/12/2021 08:56

Thanks @Lolakath19 and @sunshineclouds24. Been busy wrapping work to get ready for the holidays hence the delay in responding.

Not entirely sure how to develop focus. Explaining it doesn’t seem to cut through. We are trying simple mindfulness exercises and also doing physical activity to burn through some of the hyperactive energy in a positive way.

@sunshineclouds24 he is at a state school right now, not prep. Have applied to one other independent school locally that he will sit in Jan and should be able to clear but I am not sure it’s that much better than our outstanding state primary.

We may decide to sit 8+ if he Is okay to try again rather than send to the nearby average independent.

Happy to help if I can.
Please feel free to send me your specific questions (by PM if you wish) and I shall try and answer them for you.

sunshineclouds24 · 13/01/2022 18:48

@Archibald33 , I hope it all went well for your ds.

Archibald33 · 14/01/2022 09:04

Hi - yes he’s been invited back for the interview. Does anyone know if creative writing will be part of the assessment. DS said the exam itself didn’t have much creative writing. Wondering if that will now form part of the assessment? Any other insights on the assessment process will be gratefully received!

@Archibald33 , in case you aren't following the 7+ thread is active today.

sunshineclouds24 · 22/01/2022 08:33

@Archibald33 , I hope you got some good news.

Archibald33 · 26/01/2022 11:57

Hi Sunshine, not really! We are looking at 8+ as DS got far as a summer child with no 1-1 tutoring

Sofiasylvia · 21/01/2023 02:20

Hello, can you please recommend a 7+ tutor based in North London and send me their contact details? I have Arlette’s contact details but I need someone else. I’ve seen Miss Bloomfield’s name mentioned? Can you please send me her number? Anyone else? Thanks
