Ds handwriting and fidgeting

Hoping someone can help. Ds is in year 2 and his handwriting and drawing is way behind his classmates. He is very bright in other areas reading and maths especially

He was referred to OH in reception and they couldn't find any issues

However at the assessment he was asked to copy letters which he did fine

He really struggles with writing I can tell he is putting lots of effort in but when he or others read it back it's hard to understand. He doesn't allow enough space for words and sometimes writes over words

His teacher says he is often fidgeting in class and bumping into other children when in line. They say this isn't intentional and he doesn't seem to have control of his movements sometimes. I must admit he is always jigging about but I thought this was normal

I was recommended write from the start books which we are working through and I'm also trying to encourage more drawing, tweezer work Hama beads

Anything else I can do ?

I’d love to help.

We use researched strategies that your son should feel excited by; he should see results immediately with the writing. I’m assuming he doesn’t have a physical problem with controlling how he writes.

We’d work with his own writing, a quick, short activity, but it would take one or two phone calls because we change what we do in response to how the pupil is learning and we’d need to tell you how to do that. I don’t need to know who you are!

No charge to parents. Normally we work with specialist teachers. If you’d like to give it a go, or know more, pm me.

How bad are we talking? It's fairly typical for boys, especially summer borns, to have more difficulty with fine motor skills at this age. Again fidgeting and clumsiness isn't especially unusual unless i's to an extreme degree. Does he have any other issues? How is he socially? Are you concerned about dyspraxia or similar? IN terms of handwriting I think practising little and often is the best way forward. Postcards are great as they're short enough not to be intimidating. If it's any consolation my eldest son had appalling handwriting all through Y2. The letters weren't in cursive and were massive and barely legible despite being bright in general. Now he's Y4 and his handwriting while not beautiful is absolutely fine.

Has he had an eye test? When did he see OT and was it NHS or private assessment?

Good to hear that it can get better @NoCleanClothes I hope so

I've had his eyes tested and they are fine

Has he been checked for hypermobility syndrome? This can cause these issues
