Early reading - alternatives to Biff Chip and Kipper...

Trying to get hold of more books that year 1 DS can read independently. We get Biff Chip and Kipper via school and I’ve picked up a few second hand. Are there other similar reading schemes out there so I can find other books at his level?

Julia Donaldson's Songbird books are good.

Songbirds, written by Julia Donaldson. Also we used to buy a lot of Dorling Kindersley readers, they have lots of different levels, and topics eg my son used to love their DC Super Friends series. Also Dr Seuss books eg the cat in the hat and fox in socks are written mainly in phonetic and easily recognisable words so are great and also fun for new readers.

Bug Club books and Songbird books would be a good place to start.

Also try Project X and maybe Big Cat Books.

Thanks for ideas! Are the songbirds levels the same as Biff & Chip?

I've seen Reading Chest recommended on here before - it's a book rental subscription scheme for early readers so the books are all banded. I've not used it myself as my local library has a really good selection of banded reading scheme books I've used to top up, but I think Reading Chest lists the schemes they have.

Songbirds are published by oup who publish biff and chip books, so the banding is the same.

Look at the reading chest website, you can set the colour band you are on and it'll show you all the available books at that level. I then do a search for any that look good on the online catalogue for my local library and order them in if they have them.

The other place you could look is Book People. They do big bundles of series like Songbirds, Reading Champions and Project X really cheaply.
