What to expect from parent teacher meeting

My son is 4.5 and started reception a month ago, he is my first so I'm a bit clueless about many things.
He's at an all boys independent which I've come to find out is considered quite academic. Our intention to put him in private school wasn't for him to be pushed acamedically really, just that he may get more 1-2-1 time as he has a minor speech delay.

He seems to be coping okay, goes to school happily and is settling in I think. We're working on his writing and reading and he can now write his name and most letters, but quite messy and lacking spatial awareness. He knows all his phonics but hasn't grasped the concept of joining up the sounds yet but I'm not too worried yet.

My question is what should I expect the teacher to be focusing on at this age? I don't want her to compare him to some of the other boys who moved up from the schools nursery who already have been learning to write and read and are ahead.

He's a sweet boy and my main concern for now is that he's happy and enjoying school, is that wrong?

  1. has he settled in
  2. behaviour, friendships, character (do they know your child?)
  3. progress & how you can help

So you are spot on.
