Poetry book recommendation for KS1

DS2 (age 5 in year 1) is enjoying learning little texts and lyrics. He's a very auditory learner, and always has liked nursery rhymes and songs.

He's loving reading Dr Seuss and he's been choosing poetry books from school, but nothing too exciting.

Any recommendations for some lovely classic kids poem collections?

Thanks!

We have Julia Donaldson's 'Poems to perform', that's lovely. DS occasionally memorised a poem from that book and 'performed' it for his teacher.

In Y1, DS and I read 'Love That Dog' (Sharon Creech) together. It is a bit different in that it is sort of the diary of a child who is studying poetry at school, with an inspiring teacher. There are several 'classic' poems, then the child's musings about them and about the lessons about them, and then the child's attempt to re-create the poem 'format' but with their own content, integrating teacher feedback and using them to work through their own 'issues'. It culminates in the child creating a beautiful, touching poem about the death of their beloved pet dog. I was in tears...

We both enjoyed that book very much, got to read some beautiful poetry packaged into a 'story', and learn some stuff as a side effect.

Maybe not quite what you're looking for but the Hairy Maclary stories are beautifully written with a really delightful, playful use of language and rhyme; "Stop this shemozzle, this hullabaloo! Scarper! Skedaddle! Be off with you! Shoo!"

Any of the Michael Rosen (mustard custard grumble belly and gravy) and we’re also enjoying some of the Shirley Hughes poems eg from Poems for Annie Rose. Also some of the Walter de la Mare ones are fun eg www.scrapbook.com/poems/doc/1573.html and also Ogden Nash.

Adventures of Isobel is lovely www.best-books-for-kids.com/ogden-nash-poetry.html. These aren’t books but maybe some fun things to read together

Thanks very much all for those great recommendations.

All great authors! I didn't think of them for poetry. We do have Hairy Maclary somewhere in the house...

Brilliant stuff! Off the Ebay now!
