Year 4 reading

I would appreciate some advice, I don’t want to look like that parent!

My daughter has just started year 4 she was 8 in may (if it makes a difference) she is an avid reader who enjoys reading a lot. She spent most of year 3 selecting her own reading books from the library and from home to read at school. Has good comprehension which is tested by some kind of online quiz at school.

First week of year 4, new teacher, she has been issued a levelled reading book (it has a yellow sticker, apparently black is the highest, I think it may be the schools own system) she hates this book, she says it’s too easy (she reads with good inference and pace). The storyline is quite frankly naff and not particularly interesting.

She read this book once at home and I can’t get her to read it to me anymore. My issue is that I am not prepared to make a battle out of reading with her, I want it to be an enjoyable past time for her not a chore. I had the comment last night that she hates reading, which is not at all true and I don’t want to damage her love of reading. I just want her to read!

How long do I leave it to speak to the teacher?

I'd just comment in her diary that she read it once and found it easy so you read a book from home too. Any decent teacher/TA would then check her reading level and adjust the book band accordingly. HLTA here.

I doubt they actually want her to keep rereading an easy book in Y4!

Agree with truebeliever. Also get her to note in her reading record what other books she reads at home.

Totally agree with previous posters. Certainly no point in her reading it more than one token time.

It sounds like a mistake has been made. I’d question it and ask why she has been put back to yellow when she was a free reader in y3.
I don’t think you will be thought of as being “that” sort of parent. Just one who is involved in your dds reading.

The online quiz sounds like the Accelerated Reader scheme. If so, our school uses the coloured stickers to show which age group the content is suitable for (rather than the difficulty of the book). The books with black stickers are the ones that might be a bit too 'mature' for some of the younger readers even though they aren't technically difficult to read.

Did your DD have a chance to see what the other yellow-stickered books were like and whether they all seem to be as easy as this one was?

Either way I would do as suggested and note in the reading record that DD found it very easy. If she brings more home that are like this one, I would speak to the teacher. They would want to know if your DD was no longer enjoying her reading books.

Thanks everyone, I’ve written a small note and will give it to the teacher at pick up (the teachers are in the playground)

There were only 4 levels (black was one of them) so with the online quiz thing sounds like the accelerated reader scheme someone mentioned.

I don’t want the teacher to think I’m that parent especially so early on in the year but my daughter enjoys reading which I suppose getting them to enjoy it is half the battle won!

As far as I know she was just given the yellow stickers book, no actual choice as yet.

Teacher here.... I would absolutely want to know. I see it as my job to foster a love for reading.... if something was happening to put an avid reader off, I'd want to rectify it quickly.

BerryPie, did you get a response from the teacher to your note?
