How to help DS improving English Comprehension?

Dear all, my DS is 6.5 and he is a happy reader in Y2. His reading level is more advanced than the average peers. Somehow, teacher told me he was a bit of struggling with the comprehension.

Can I have any suggestion about how to improve the comprehension please? Any book or practice maybe?

Thanks a lot!

you could get a workbook like this and go through it with him, if you like. it might help if after he has done his reading book, to ask him to tell you what happened in the chapter in his own words, and then ask questions like 'what do you think is going to happen next', and 'how do you think the character is feeling'

Does he read to you/someone every day, or only on his own?

I wouldn't bother with workbooks to help with comprehension, but chatting with him about the book before, during and after reading sessions along the lines sleepis has suggested will help him to develop his comprehension skills.

Reading bedtime stories and talking about them is a fun way to practice reading comprehension every day. We tend to read myths from the world.....Chinese myths (esp monkey king), Greek & Roman myths, Norse myths, Native American myths, African myths, Indian myths (Ramayana). Myths are good because there is always a lot going on to discuss.

OH....I forgot also thousand and one nights (Arabic myths).

Agree, read together every night and discuss the text. I bloody hate doing it (love the reading, hate the discussion - it's like pulling teeth), but it works. Get more complex as they get older - eg which words can you pick out which help create the atmosphere in this scene (can you tell we're in 11+year Grin?).
