Reversing letters,words & numbers- normal?

Ds turned 7 recently and is now in Year 2

Throughout reception and year 1 he has been reversing letters, numbers and words. I spoke to the teacher about it she said it’s very normal to do this at this age.

Tonight we did some number work at home and again he’s reversing numbers (13 becomes 31) and writing some numbers backwards still. We gave up with the reading because he gets frustrated, some words he reverses like the word ‘saw’ becomes ‘was’.

Should I bring this up with the teacher or wait a bit longer to see if it’s just a phase?

It is very normal at the start of Y2. I wouldn't worry just yet, but would keep an eye on it and maybe mention it at parents evening.

With reading, you could try making an L-shaped card, just a small rectangle with a notch cut out. Slide this over the book so that you reveal one word at a time, and if he misreads a word go back and show one sound at a time. So s-aw for saw.

With numbers, try drawing 2 columns and writing T for tens and either U for units or O for ones, whichever he is used to. Then when you're doing maths, keep talking about the place value.

I came on here to post exactly the same thing! DD has just turned 7 and started Year 2 this week. She is currently on white book band so is able to read words such as ‘excitement’, ‘understanding’ and ‘impossible’ - yet it comes to little words like ‘was’ and she reads it as ‘saw’ or when she writes the number 7 it’s backwards. Good to hear that this is quite common and hoping it passes.

Mine be reversed many letters/numbers at that age. It improved around Year 4.

My DD didn't this at that age. Mirror writing and letters all over the place.
She's just started secondary and stopped this a while back, cannot remember when but it's been ages.
She's left handed. Apparently no correlation but I met and read more about those that were left handed that did this than right handed people.
But do mention to the teacher if you're really worried.

Have you considered the possibility of dyslexia? My DS still reverses letters and numbers at age 11. We were told it was normal when he was younger but there were other red flags for us that made us think there was more to it. He was the same as Tinkerbell's DC. He could read words like 'adventure' and 'treasure' but not was, an, the, and, it etc. If you ask for a screening test at school be wary that they are very faulty! If you suspect a learning difficulty, a proper assessment is the way to go, though quite costly.
