Spelling in yr 1

So my DS has started yr1 and it seems there is a real step change from Reception.

Is it normal that there will be weekly spelling tests? He has been given homework to spell the 12 months of the year as well as the days of the week.

Is this a bit too much or par the course for the start of yr1?

Can anyone tell me whats the expectations at the end of yr1?

HI My little boy has just started year 1 aswell we got a sheet with info on he will get homework every week but insure whst it will be aswell as ready books twice a week and she seems to be listening to the read daily so far. We got a sheet with the expectations for end of year 1 on il get it and can tell you but I dont know if all schools the same so might be worth asking. I think that's a lot of homework for the first week personally.

It is fairly standard homework each week. Maybe not the FIRST week, but from then on. Plus maths. and stupid 'games' they send home to play as a family, plus the class bear, plus the food diary!

Lots of parents request such homework, many schools give it, no it's not normal, but it's not completely abnormal either.

February is on the Year 3 words in the Curriculum (no other days or months are on any) you can find the spelling expectations in the national curriculum on line.

Personally I would not be bothering with that homework - learning spelling by memorising words is generally a poor technique, and it's very, very unlikely that sufficient phonic knowledge has been provided for kids to spell all the months and days by the end of reception.

My son has just gone into Y1 and has been having weekly spelling tests since the middle of reception. They were also asked to do spelling sentences using the spellings set.tAlso two reading books a week, a piece of maths and a learning journal to fill in.

troppibambini · 05/09/2019 22:27

Ds could have a good go at the days of the week as they write it everyday not so sure about months.

Yes spelling test fairly standard in year 1 however that seems to be rather a lot of spellings to learn in one week.

LetItGoToRuin · 06/09/2019 08:17

DD's school didn't send spellings home in Y1, but plenty do. That's a long and challenging list for the start of Y1 though - I'd expect 5-10 words correlating to a theme they're working on in class.

If that's definitely too much/too hard for your DC, perhaps just work on a few or speak to the teacher.

Toward the later half of y1 we had 5 a week to practice but no tests. Other local schools had a list of 10 and weekly tests from the start of the year.

Yes my son has just started year one.

Weekly spelling tests.

At least four nights reading to be filled in reading log.

And a weekly maths or science homework.

Big step up isn't it? He had one weekly reading book and homework sheet in reception F2

LoveWine123 · 06/09/2019 14:12

My son has had weekly spelling tests since middle of reception year, 9 each week. I believe there will be more spellings in Y1, but no info has come from the school yet.

Rudolphtherednose · 06/09/2019 19:52

We just get 3 words a week in year one for spellings, plus daily reading. I think that's plenty. There's also some other optional stuff to do online, which I doubt we'll get round to.

Korvalscat · 06/09/2019 22:39

Last year, in Year 1, dgs had a weekly spelling test of 5 words. The words ranged in difficulty from 'be', 'my' etc to 'through' and 'February'. His reading book was changed once per week and we were expected to read with him each day. He also had a page of his English workbook and a maths sheet each week. Later in the year he had practice sheets of alien and decodable words (for yr 1 phonics check) and sometimes handwriting practice sheets which were always optional.
He also had the same reading homework in Reception and again a worksheet for both maths and English but no spellings.

DD (just started yr 2) had about 6 spellings/week to learn in Y1; these were differentiated, so there were three different sets of spellings depending on how difficult you found them. She was also expected to read, and do a couple of worksheets each week. Might be worth saying that her teacher disliked homework, so gave the minimum she could get away with!
