Another school uniform thread...

After readying a few of these type threads I’m beginning to worry I don’t have enough uniform for my DD starting school (reception class) in September.

I’ve only got her:
3 polo shirts
2 pinafores
2 cardigans

Plus the usual pants, socks, vests etc and pe kit which consists of 2 pairs of shorts and 2 T-shirt’s. They don’t need plimsoles / trainers in her school for reception.

I thought this would be plenty but I see loads of people saying they have fresh everyday Hmm

Do I need to buy more or it enough would you say?

I bought 5 sets as DD was going to be in breakfast and afterschool club every day. Plus im a lazy so i do one uniform wash on Friday night.

If you are collecting your DC from school at 3pm and will change them into other clothes then you can get away with less.

3boysandabump · 15/08/2019 21:34

Depends how often you wash.

I'm rubbish at ironing so I have more than 1 each day to give me time to catch up.

ballsdeep · 15/08/2019 21:36

I'd get more cardigans. So many children lose them. I've bought four for mine and the same with tops and trousers.

Whathappenedtothelego · 15/08/2019 21:37

I found shirts got less mucky but needed clean pinafore and jumper every day in Reception. Rare day when lunch wasn't spilled on it.

mogtheexcellent · 16/08/2019 09:48

For all those worrying about ironing.

Dont.

Just hang on hangers to dry. No ironing. Its a lifesaver honestly.

3boysandabump · 16/08/2019 10:09

@mogtheexcellent I just couldn't not iron. I iron underwear and everything. I know life's to short but I just have to 🙈😂

3boysandabump · 16/08/2019 10:10

*Too short

drspouse · 16/08/2019 10:13

Definitely 1 polo shirt per day and one spare in case one gets ruined at an inconvenient time.
Unless you are lucky and have a black polo as school uniform!
I have never ironed any school uniform, not even DS pure cotton trousers as he is a fussy child slightly sensitive soul.

locketsprocket · 16/08/2019 10:15

This is my 4th child going into reception and I've always had the following which worked fine

6 polos (3x2packs)
3 pinafore/skirt
2 cardi
1 pe kit as stays at school all term

Chilledout11 · 16/08/2019 10:18

I would get three sets of uniform and maybe an extra polo. I tend to put them on a quick wash when they get home but sometimes it's too busy. Also they get worn quickly so a few sets are handy.

PantsyMcPantsface · 17/08/2019 13:07

Saw on my FB that it's Sainsbury's special offer time at the moment in case it helps (don't know when it ends as I'm not particularly near one). Tempted to do the long trip to the nearest one and buy some of their patent brogues though as they're the only shoes DD2 hasn't managed to destroy at school (I swap the laces for no-tie ones to turn them into slip ons basically).

I'm actually tempted to buy more white shirts for DD1 as I always struggle to get a white wash load (and I scrupulously separate for the first month of term as red's a bugger for spreading) of whites.

TeamUnicorn · 18/08/2019 12:07

I generally like 6 tops. One for each day plus a spare for the Monday if haven't been able to wash over the weekend.

I have got DD 3 logo polos plus 3 plain ones. 2 logo cardigans and then 2 cheap Asda ones.

DS pretty much needed a full change everyday. Her not so much.

furtivefeline · 21/08/2019 15:26

If anyone is still to buy school shoes, I just noticed that John Lewis has 30% off all Clarks ones as part of a price match.

SconeofDestiny · 21/08/2019 15:33

My DS (10yrs) tends to wear 2 school shirts a week, swapped on either Wednesday or Thursday depending on bath night.
He's not into lots of physical activity so he stays clean and rarely wears out any clothes. Usually, he just grows out of them.
I do get him to change when he gets home as I think it helps them unwind after school.

DumbleDork · 22/08/2019 10:23

Those that have clean each day, do you buy 5 of everything and do one "school wash" a week or just wash and dry mid week?

drspouse · 22/08/2019 10:32

6 lots, wash at the weekend.
I think by the end of primary school you can get away with wearing the same one for more than one day but the younger ones just come home wearing their lunch/have done painting of polo shirt.

DumbleDork · 22/08/2019 11:40

Thanks. I've now 6 sets of everything so I've a fresh each day and a spare in her bag. I managed to get 6 of our logo cardigans for £10 in the nearly new sale the other day. Bargain when they are £13.50 brand new Shock

That's really good value!
One of mine throws off his jumper the second he's inside the school gates and the other leaves it on no matter how warm the day.
So you may need that many jumpers, or you may just need one...

DumbleDork · 22/08/2019 15:52

One of my friends little ones is starting school the same time and is tiny so I can pass her outgrown stuff to her so I won't waste it if I have too much

I had m&s pinafores and dinner sponged off nicely.More polo shirts.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 25/08/2019 21:37

mine managed perfectly well from Reception with 2 shirts, 2 pinafores/skirts (going down to 1 from year 4) and 1 cardigan.

never had any reason to buy any more. they never smelt wearing a shirt for 2/3 days.

drspouse · 26/08/2019 09:09

Clearly they never used paint or whiteboard pen at your DCs school, or served spaghetti!

CherryPavlova · 26/08/2019 09:13

Gracious. Lots of independent schools have very expensive uniforms. Pinafores are dry cleaned half termly with a sponge in between, if necessary. Blazers are rarely cleaned.

Ynci · 26/08/2019 13:25

Please name everything! I’m a teacher and I reckon less than 50% of clothes I pick up have names in. There is very little chance of you getting it back if it isn’t named.
Writing initials on the label is fine. But PLEASE remember to refresh this as it gets very faint after a while.

DumbleDork · 26/08/2019 21:58

ynci already done. Wrote on the name label but also have an iron in too behind the label. Too much experience of stuff going missing in preschool
