Hi everyone
Is there a site you're aware of, that gives general structure for different essay types? This is for senior school entrance tests. What are they looking for?

I wouldn't write instructions in paragraphs but in points to make them clear.

Instructions surely would normally be a numbered list or bullet points.

  1. Open toothpaste lid. This may be by unscrewing, or these days more usually it will be a flip top.
  2. Squeeze toothpaste onto toothbrush. You need the same amount as a large pea.
  3. Wet the toothpaste by holding the head under a flowing cold tap for 2 seconds
  4. ...

Thanks. It just seems like such a boring exam question. I wonder if they would expect children to be descriptive within the essay, for example if instructions for how to clean a room, are they looking for explanations like "with your cloth, rub the mirror vigorously until it gleams!"

This site has some tips? Are you sure that they will be asked to write instructions? Most independent schools I know have creative writing tasks in their entrance exams

I'd say that instructions need to be clear so flowery language won't help. It also seems a little basic.

I'd say that children are more likely to be tested on writing creatively, logically, putting together arguments and explaining clearly etc.

Thanks again. It is one of the essay writing styles apparently and there's such a question in the examples provided by the CCSE Essex 11+ website.
