Do schools have to release KS1 SAT scores to parents?

Just that really. Are they obliged to let parents have the raw scores?

I’ve had my DD end of year report and there is a teacher’s assessment of the results showing what level my DD is (ie: at expected level) but I’m just curious as to what she actually scored.

I’ve googled and all I can glean is that schools interpret and report results in their own way and you may not get the actual scores unless you ask for them. Well, I’ve asked and I got a very non-committal “oh I’ll check if we can release them”.

Do I was wondering if they are obliged to release them?

They don’t have to no, but you can request them. Rather than the raw scores, ask for the scaled score. These are used to help to teacher assess. A score of 100 or above indicates that your child is achieving the expected standard although the teacher uses more than just the test to make an assessment. Higher than 110 can go towards judging them to be greater depth but they would have to show this in their class work too.

Don't forget, in KS1 the end of Key Stage assessment isn't based on the SATs. They just form one basis of the work used to get a teacher assessment. The rest will come from the work done in school and what your child's teacher knows of them.

We don't include them in routine reports. I know we had a parent ask for them last year but Im not sure what information she was given.

Parents do have a right to have information about their child but hopefully they will oblige without a battle. We do always give this information.

If the school keeps educational records, you have the right to see them, the teacher did not need to check, she should have been aware of the policy.

I never understand why so many teachers don't give the marks and feed back to the individual children - they marked the KS1 SAT, any other piece of work they marked they would have given feedback, why not the SATs? DD's school did, so you know the scores then from the child.

Equally I don't see the point in the school routinely providing the data to the parents in a report, it really is little different to any other piece of work.

Thank you everyone. Really useful to have your advice.

OP , did you get the results you wanted?

My friend wanted to know like you. Also her son may be sitting entrance exams in the future, and she really wanted to know exactly where he stands in Maths and English.

But she says when she asked the classteacher, she was dismissed with an ' we don't give them out at this school'

KS1 information for parents, from gov.uk, updated 10 June 2019

"Some schools may choose to report test results to parents, alongside the overall teacher assessment judgements. If your child’s school does not report KS1 test results alongside the teacher assessment judgements, you can request to see them."

KS1 SATs really won't provide much insight into that, they are purely designed for testing if students have met the expected standard, there are few to no difficult questions that would discriminate between students as entrance exams endeavour to do.

@Feelbad1 no haven’t had them yet! Am chasing up the school and will report back.
