Music Scholarship Advice

Hi
DD is at a local indie and we’ll be applying for a music scholarship for her for the senior school at her instrumental teacher’s suggestion.
If she’s shortlisted then she’ll have to do an audition. This is likely to be in the second half of the Christmas term. We’ve sorted the instrumental pieces (2 for first study and 1 for the second are requested) but she also has to sing a song as she’s not offering voice as one of her “instruments”.
She has a nice voice but does not have singing lessons. Any suggestions on what sort of thing would be good? I’m presuming it would be better to do a simple thing well rather than anything too complicated? Do you think it would be worth getting a teacher for a few months to teach her a song or is it likely that just turning up and singing something she’s learnt will be sufficient? I appreciate it will vary from school to school but wondered if there was any generally perceived wisdom? Thanks.

Try an unaccompanied folk song; there used to be one at every grade in Trinity exams, I think. They are generally simple, will show she can hold pitch, and are easy to memorise. A few sessions with a teacher could be valuable to prove she is barking up the right tree. Good luck. Mine did Salley Gardens for I don't know how many entrance exams ... mainlynorfolk.info/folk/songs/downbythesalleygardens.html

Choose a song which is written to be sung by a child of her age. My daughter's instrument is her voice so we have a considerable amount of experience with this.

Thank you both. Any specific suggestions lonecat?
She sings in a church choir so is used to multi-part harmonies and choral music - she just doesn’t have individual singing lessons.

Ask her director of music at church? Something she knows already would be the easy option. All the school will care about at 11 is can she sing in tune and blend with others?

DD is a musical theatre specialist so from that division I would suggest things like When I grow up from Matilda, Tomorrow from Annie. However, as she sings in a church choir that possibility could be to bigger a stylist leap to risk on a scholarship audition. I agree with @Moominmammacat approaching her choir director is the best option.
