Hearing children reading

My dc is in Reception and no one listens to them read. Is this normal? I don’t understand how they know which book band they are supposed to be on.

It's basically a job application for a volunteering position ...a long drawn out process which staff and volunteers are being told is a legal requirement

We don't fill in the log when we hear children read in class (reception). I ask my team to fill in a separate record which is kept in school. This is not for accountability (as a pp stated, but because home reading logs go missing so if we are moderated etc we have lost the required info!) we do respond to parent comments if needed.

We aim to listen to each child read their reading book 1 x every two weeks (teacher) and 1 x every two weeks (TA). The children also ready during Continuous provision (adults are around to support learning) adult led activities, phonics sessions and follow up activities, during welcome sessions etc etc. We teach the children to read a variety of texts and for a variety of purposes, so reading may not always take the form of a book.

@nomushrooms thank you so much! That's a great idea. I volunteer at our local library and Children's Centre too, so will ask the managers of both to see if there is anyone they can think of who might be able to spare an hour (once I've checked with the Head of course).

@Norestformrz our parent helpers have to be DBS cleared (despite being in th classroom with the teachers and TA's and never being left alone with the children). Don't know about references as it was a few years ago I joined as a volunteer. Sounds a bit OTT to me though?

MontyBowJangles · 13/07/2019 08:55

@nomushrooms I'm impressed you train your volunteers too! We get nothing (although I did attend a phonics/reading workshop last year, but that was of my own accord).

"General consensus" that they're not being listened to? Hmm
Of course they are?
Have you asked the teacher? Write in the diary, ask the teacher when she's going to be reviewed/assessed again?

nomushrooms · 13/07/2019 12:53

@MontyBowJangles It’s not formal training though (way beyond our budget sadly) but they do sit down with the teacher and chat through segmenting and blending, and get a list of graphemes and key words.

A lot of our best helpers are parents of the current Year 6 class unfortunately, so we will be appealing for more come September.

We have to have two references for volunteers as well - it's the new Ofsted safeguarding regime, I believe.

How nice of the government to simultaneously cut funding and make it ten times harder for people to volunteer!

Norestformrz · 13/07/2019 16:40

Thanks ...all our TAs were made redundant at Easter. Parents /volunteers don't feel inclined to jump through the hoops so children are heard less frequently than I'd like.

That's awful Sad
