Hi, we are thinking of relocating to areas close to London. We would like to see which areas in Greater London have most top state schools to attend. Our kids will be going for in-year admission (Year 3 and Year 5). Thank you.

You are lucky there are many many areas with good state schools in London. We are in Lambeth (nr also Southwark) lots of good state schools here. I think your desired commute / type of location inner London/ suburb / commuter town / budget will drive your search. Then find a pocket in that location with several good schools and a good secondary in a few years for your older one.

Thank you. Is in year admission to top schools difficult in tide places? Appreciate any advice. Thank you very much.

Admission to most community primary schools (but not all) is based on distance. There is no secret to getting an in year place you need to be close and a place needs to come up via someone leaving.

At my DC school places often come up due to foreign office employees going overseas / families relocating out of London / children going to private schools. This is normally one or two places per year but no guarantees.

What you want a cluster of good / outstanding large primary schools and then you hope for places to come up.

If you have other criteria like where you need to commute to / budget / type of place then you are more likely to get suggestions of areas. There is no one borough or location in London with all the good schools and all the other areas the schools are poor.

You say you are looking at moving ‘close to London’ and specify schools in Greater London. Just to check, you do understand that eligibility for schools depends on the proximity of your home address? In the most sought after schools this will need to be very close indeed.

Another place, close to London with transport links and great state primaries and senior as well as privates is Wimbledon.
