Need tips and advice for ds starting reception in September

My son is starting reception in September and I have 7 weeks to get ourselves organised and ready for him to go to school.
He has been at nursery since last september but the only problem being that he always went in the afternoon, so we never had to get up early or be super organised, so I'm kinda out of sorts.

If you can all share your tips and wisdom for being organised so that I can be ready for September then that would be fab.

xx

Dress and undress himself. Will he have school dinner or packed lunch?

I agree with the dressing and undressing bit and also can he wipe his own bottom when at the toilet.

Apart from that I wouldn't stress too much, they are only 4 after all and the teachers have seen it all before

Practice doing the school run with him (if it's different from nursery)so you both know how long it will take.
Allocate a peg/space in the hall for his coat, shoes, book bag etc. When you get home from school the stuff goes there and it ready to grab in the morning.
Practice pack lunches, so you know what he likes and can manage to eat in 20 minutes or so.
Practice getting PE kit & plimsolls on and off.
Start having early nights about week before school starts and get up early.

I always put uniform/clothes out the night before.

I don't do lunch the night before but I make sure the lunchbox is cleaned out adn ready to go - if anything needs preparing then I do that the night before, e.g. chopping up fruit/cucumber pieces.

I always sign any notes, get money together or whatever and put it in the book bag the night before.

Just get up with plenty of time.

It's not difficult though - I manage to get a 6, 4 and 2 year old ready and out the door at 8.20.

Answer to Cornsilk, he will be having packed lunches, the schools round here don't do school dinners xx

Regarding school lunches, my girls prefer 5 small things, rather than 2 or 3 big.

Also when you collect him, take a fresh drink and a healthy snack, he'll be ready for it then.

Get up on time

Smithagain · 25/07/2007 12:49

Get everything YOU need for the day ready the night before. The number of times I've got everything ready for school, nagged DD1 into getting ready on time, then we're late because of all the stuff I need after I've dropped her off.

Remember that you need to put names on everything and don't leave it till the night before he starts (voice of experience here!)

Getting up a bit earlier than you really need to, so that he doesn't have to rush from one boring thing (dressing, teeth, hair etc) to another is good, too.

But honestly, you'll get into the swing of it. And then you'll feel smug when other mums say they can't get out of the house before 10am

Agree with giving him a packed lunch to practice on over the holidays...so that he gets used to opening box, bags, drinks etc
Practice with getting dressed...shoes..coats zips and hooks on trousers etc
Also try to get him going to the toilet and wiping his bottom by himself.
I reckon that's about it...the rest will come for him.
For you i would say...just give yourself plenty of time in the mornings. I make packed lunches in the morning...but do all the other stuff the night before (letters, set out packed lunch bags ready, make sure cool blocks are frozen etc)
Good luck!
