Right, a bit of background, my borough's schools currently take the 11+ in Novemeber, AFTER the closing period for secondary school applications, meaning that you have to put down both selective and non-selective choices. The results are sent out the following March. The children take 4 tests, English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning.

They are now suggesting that starting in 2008, (which is when my ds takes his 11+) having the test in September and sending the results out in October one week before the closing date for applications, so that you know which type of school to apply for. They are also going to shorten it from 4 tests to 2 (Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning).

My question is this, are the results based on an average of all 4 tests, in which case taking 4 rather than 2 would give them a better chance, or do they have to be in the top 20% in all tests, in which case 2 tests would be preferable? Do you think what they are suggesting is a good idea? TIA

In our area there are 4 tests. For maths, VR and NVR children need to achieve at least 120/140 in at least 2 subjects and 115/140 for the third. English is only marked for borderline pupils. I took a risk and only applied for selective schools on the basis that all the other options around here are places I would never send my child.

In our area you apply for schools in October then they do the test in January - the tests are the same as Swedishmum. We put selective first then the best of the rest as a safety net.
There is a very useful - if somewhat intense and navel gazing forum on www.elevenplussuccess.co.uk (sorry, my links never work!). I'm sure you'll find olots of useful info there.
