Do they need to know about Venn diagrams for KS1 SATS?

Rare day off work today, so visited a friend.

Both of our DDs are doing SATS this week.

We've been very low key and not practiced for SATS, other than the odd bit of homework from school.

My friend's DD's school is slightly different and made the kids aware of the tests, so Dfriend has bought some practice tests from Scholastic to get her DD more used to the test format so she's less worried.

Dfriend showed the tests to me today and they seemed quite hard - harder than any bits of homework DD has had.

There were Venn diagrams where you had to sort numbers into either odd numbers, 5 times table, or the middle of the Venn diagram. I think that would truely flummox DD as I don't think she knows what a Venn diagram is!

Yes, they do. Venn diagram is part of ks1 maths curriculum.

Comefromaway · 21/05/2019 14:40

No, Venn diagrams don't come until much later in the curriculum.

This is a link to past KS1 SATS papers for you to compare.

They might be asked to sort shapes or odd/even numbers etc into two circles in KS1 but not overlap.

My DD is in Y2. They did learn about venn diagrams. The K1 SAT paper is not likely to use the actual words of venn diagram but children will be asked to sort data such as odd numbers, shapes. Expect questions on 5 times table. In year 2 the national curriculum expects children to learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Theyve probably already done them as they are in may

Didiplanthis · 22/05/2019 19:05

Ks1 sats aren't at a fixed date unlike ks2. Mine are doing ks1 and not done yet.

spanieleyes · 22/05/2019 19:14

Well I hope they've started because, although there are no fixed dates, they do have to be completed by the end of May and most schools are on holiday next week!

Helix1244 · 22/05/2019 19:36

Exactly, silly to leave till last minute parents could take out early for holiday or the kid be ill.

DD did maths reasoning today. Said it was easy Hmm
So either she's done well or really badly. Either way, she seems happy and stress-free so I can't complain.

Either way, it really doesn't matter. KS1 sats is just a small part of teacher assessment. Don't get why the Hmm

Satina · 23/05/2019 10:08

Sorry, the Hmm face was because when she says things are "easy", she's usually made up in her head what the question's asking and answered in her own unique way. So I was Hmming at whether the questions were actually 'easy' or whether DD has just breezed through answering them in her own way Grin
Either way, as long as she's happy and her teacher's happy with her progress, I'm happy.

Yes and no. We don't teach Venn diagrams by name, but we expect Year 2 to be able to sort into two categories.

Like others have said, they wouldn't overlap and there wouldn't be any 'neither' option.

As an aside, SATS don't matter to anyone but the teacher. So please don't get caught up in your friend's stress.
