What happens after not passing year 1 phonics screening?

I know they get extra support and retake the test in year 2. But ds is already getting support and extra funding (band 3). Does this mean he will get more support/funding or will he just carry on with his current support? He scored 18 in the last practice test which was a huge improvement as he scored 5 in January.

He won't get any more funding. He'll probably just have extra phonics input along with any others who didn't pass in Year 1.

Sounds like what they're doing is working then and it's starting to click. Do you feel he needs more? I don't think phonics test would be what triggered it. It's a really good sign that they didn't wait for him to fail the screening check before getting extra help in place.

There’s no funding attached to the phonics test. Any child who doesn’t pass will continue to learn phonics in Year 2 in whatever way the school decides to do it. If your child has an EHCP then his LSA will probably be directed to support him with this.

If he already has support funded and he is making progress he will just carry on getting the same support and redo it in year 2.

Thankyou. I'm happy with the support he is getting now although I always worry when he starts a new school year if he will be ok and if his funding will be enough. He is making progress but the gap between him and the average child of his age has been getting wider since he was born.
