Bounds Green Junior and Primary Schools

Hi

We're going to be moving and are looking at buying a property which would be in the catchment area for Bounds Green Junior/Primary School. We have a 3 yo son who'd start in 2021.

The school looks like it has decent OFSTED reports but wondered whether any fab Mumsnet peeps might have personal experience/opinions on how good the school actually is?

The alternative would be for us to rent a place in the catchment for Rhodes Ave/Coldfall/Muswell Hill (can't afford to buy in these areas!).

Any other perspectives on the Bounds Green area for families would be greatly appreciated!

Thx! Smile

Hi...several months later I stumbled on your post! Too late now I imagine.

Anyway, in case it's of use, we have two kids at Bounds Green Primary and it's been perfect for them. As with anything, I think it depends on your kids and your own preferences in relation to what's important. Personally, I'd buy near Bounds Green rather than rent near Rhodes. They are very, very different schools and Rhodes doesn't appear worth changing your plans for when Bounds Green is so lovely. If you're interested in results, analyse them carefully - Bounds Green holds its own vis-a-vis Rhodes (a fact that tends to be contrary to local beliefs in the relative academic achievements of each school).

They don't have much homework at Bounds Green. Emphasis is certainly less on drills (apart from the weekly spellings after year 2) and tests. They didn't even mention the results of the year 2 SATs to us as it was kept very low key for the children. This appears to be unusual for the area and is another thing I sort of love them for. Homework tends to be limited to holiday journals and reporting back to their friends on what they did, along with drawings and pictures. At least at the younger age (my eldest is in year 3, and I don't know how it goes from there - more homework would make sense to a certain extent as they get older, of course).

The school community is very multicultural and the school celebrates that with food and dance and songs in other languages. A London school for a Londoner child. Great. Another thing I wouldn't do without for my children's education and also something you do not get in the same way in other schools in more expensive catchments.

Teachers have been really lovely and encouraging. Their attitude to discipline is constructive (in particular, the deputy head is fantastic at this - she treads the perfect line between firm and understanding of the disciplined child's personal needs in helping them deal with their behaviour).

Parent community has been a revelation. Really friendly, non-competitive community spirit.

If you did choose Bounds and the things I mentioned as being positive about it ring true to you too, then I'm almost sure you'll feel you made the right choice :-)

Probably too late but I'd buy in coldfalls catchment first. It has reasonably (for the area) priced houses and gorgeous green space that you won't get at Bounds Green.
