Get him a big lad of paper and a stack of pens and let him fly. Talk about it with him when he wants to, read his chapters and be generally enthusiastic about it. I still have the first 3 chapters of a book my daughter wrote at that age. She's now about to go to Uni. We read it together recently & had fits of giggles about it. It was hilarious 😉

Usborne do a couple of nice books on how to plan and write a story, and creative writing. My DD is a bit younger (8) and has aspirations to become an author, and she's really enjoyed these books. There are sections on how to create and develop characters, write stories on different themes etc.

I'm not sure whether there's anything specifically about how to write chapter books, but they might be worth a look.

Agree with fun mummy, but I would buy a notebook not a pad .

I well remember my first attempt at a chapter book, I have no idea why I decided to write about horses on a ranch in the states, I knew nothing about horses, ranches or the states. Must have been the influence of reading My Friend Flicka a few weeks previously!! It all came to nothing when my big sister found it and mocked because 8 year old me had muddled up corral and coral.

My second piece of advice is to keep an eye out for sneering siblings and stop them in their tracks..........

Notepad and pen. I road loads of very Enid Blyton type stories that way. I occasionally try and read the bad handwriting and re-read them to myself and chuckle.

Dd2 usually has hers set in a boarding school abroad. She liked the Chalet School.
