Hamilton or Oxford House prep?

Does anyone know how many kids go to grammar schools or private secondaries after Hamilton primary in Colchester? Currently trying to decide between Hamilton and Oxford House and cant decide! Not sure if by going Hamilton and getting tutors I would still be letting my DD down in some way. Would love to hear from anyone with experience of any of those two schools

I think it’s been just over 10 children the last two years at Hamilton, mostly boys. I believe that is more than typical. That’s only grammar, no idea about private. Of the current year 7s at CRGS, 8 of them come from Hamilton.

Have you visited both schools? Oxford house works the children very hard and preps for the 11+ extensively. Smaller class sizes, etc. DC typically start there age 2-3 and are in full time nursery/ education age 3-4. In my opinion - advantage is DD is likely to get a grammar place, disadvantage is at what cost? There are other private/ prep options if Oxford house doesn’t suit your DD.

Hamilton has no green space which is a shame. A mixed demographic in terms of socioeconomic status and ability. Class sizes of 30 pupils. As it is state, it is bound by the national curriculum. Very keen on SATs. Funding issues like all state schools.

For context, my DC attend Hamilton. They are both able and I’m sure would be doing much more at Oxford house. However, I like that they are not. My DH and I both went to the grammars. I moved back to Colchester when pregnant because I want my DC to have the same opportunities. Now - I couldn’t care less as long as they’re happy. (My DS6 does assure me that he will be going to the ‘exam school’ because they have a pool)

I find it entertaining how much my attitude had changed to many things during this parenting journey.

Good luck deciding - I hope you find the right school for your DD to thrive.

Just read your other post. I se the value in saving money towards secondary - grammar is far from guaranteed.

Most importantly - the grammar can be a damaging place for the DC who are not quite right for it but trained to pass the 11+. You can know now whether your DD will be best suited to grammar or a private secondary.

Can’t*

Jeez - I hate posting from my phone

Thank you for sharing LemonFritz! I’m more inclined to send her to Hamilton. There doesn’t seem to be a massive enough difference for me to justify the cost of sending her to OH, especially when I could then send her on to private secondary and that will at least be much more guaranteed than grammar. Also I agree with you about workload at OH. I’m not sure if that’s good for them when they are still so young

How are you finding Hamilton in general LemonFritz? How are the teachers, pastoral care i.e if here are any issues with bullying and do the kids all appear generally happy?

I’m pleased with it so far. We haven’t had any big bullying issues so I cannot comment on that. School were happy for a meeting and discussing solutions when we had a minor issue. You will find they give the children a slower start than prep schools. Some parents switched to private in reception as they got twitchy about reading progress, but I honestly don’t see the value of pushing them age 4. My DS in year 1 is now a very able reader.

Funny you said about reading as I did notice Hamilton’s score for reading is lower than maths or writing. Still, it’s something you can practice at home.
