English Literacy and Language Help

As it's my first child going through reception and schooling I really have no experience of how English is taught and doubly so as it is a new school - this is the first year of operation.

Currently I help my son with his reading and then he talks about what he has done at school or what they are working on in Phonics and Reading. I then just go on the internet and find some worksheets what we can do together but it seems so unstructured.

Does anyone have a English Literacy programme or textbooks that have clear progression so I can work with that rather than my current ad hoc approach.

I have asked the teachers and they mentioned Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds but when do kids start SPaG?

I have searched on the internet but it seems teaching English is something that each school and teacher does for themselves rather than follow a scheme?

Is this a reception child? If so, reading with them and talking to them, like you are doing, is ample. If the school are doing Jolly Phonics then you can reinforce the actions etc. You don’t need to be undertaking a curriculum at home.

They won’t start to follow the “National Curriculum” until Y1. In reception they follow the Early Years Foundation Stage same as in preschool.
In my experience most schools do phases 1-4 of “letters and sounds” in reception so that would be a good place to start.

Yes DS in Reception but it looks like I may have to homeschool as there is an ongoing issue with the School build.

So in year 1 how is English literacy taught?

This is an overview of “what” is taught:

But teaching is a skilled job so exactly “how” it is taught is often at the teacher’s/school’s discretion.

Norestformrz · 18/04/2019 12:10

The "how" is up to the school/teacher

This is a paid site but you can see what sort of things they learn in reception, and you can try up to 10 questions free without subscribing.

What I meant to say is I have searched all over the net and can't seem to find any textbooks or work plan that teaches English Literacy in a structured manner.

I have seen books that focus on Spelling, Punctation, Grammar, Comprehension etc but I don't know how it all fits together ie do you teach the spelling first and then Grammar?

As I mentioned before my DS will be going into Y1 but we will still be in temporary accomodation and the longer this continues the smaller the chances of the school actually ever being built so I am pre-empting this all by looking at Home Schooling.

But you won’t get that online unless you pay because that is part of the value that qualified teachers add and that they are paid for.

I know in other countries (for example Germany where I am), every class follows the same textbook and therefore essentially the same lesson plan but it isn’t done like that in the UK. The outcomes are standardised but the process is not.

Perhaps ask in the Home Ed section because they may be able to recommend resources to help.

Norestformrz · 18/04/2019 12:44

You won't find it because it doesn't exist. There is no standard "how" just a "what" teachers and schools have the freedom to teach the curriculum content how they wish.

Ahmawa · 18/04/2019 13:36

I don't mind paying - I don't want something for free. I wasn't looking for freebies.

You won't get one even if you pay because it doesn't exist. Your child's school will advice how they work which won't necessarily be the same as other schools.

There are books available - free called the national curriculum - pages and pages!!

I’ll see if I can find the number

GreenTulips · 18/04/2019 13:46

How these things are taught is down to the teachers, they use a variety of materials - indoors outdoors worksheets books - usually done using a topic to hold it all together -

user789653241 · 19/04/2019 12:20

If you want something close to text books, maybe you can get something like SATS revision guide books(not a work book) which covers all they need to know in ks1, or ks2?

Norestformrz · 19/04/2019 12:45

"There are books available - free called the national curriculum - pages and pages!! " which says what is the minimum that should be taught but not how or even which order so not what the O
P asked for
