Hello, we are planning to buy our first home and looking at commuter town options. We would like an hour or under of commute (to Oxford Circus station). Our priority is finding a good state primary school. We have a four year old and are planning for another one. We will need good options for secondary schools as well.
St. Albans seems like a good option right now. Are there any other towns/areas we should consider?
Out budget is around 600K for a three bedroom place.
Appreciate your inputs.

Berkhamsted is a great town. Much smaller than St Albans but similar vibe. Direct train into Euston and you can 99% of the time get a seat.

All primaries rated outstanding or good and a great comprehensive (Ashlyns).

Your budget will be pushed to the max in both St Albans and Berkhamsted though.

Winchester has really good schools both primary and secondary all good and outstanding with very good results. Trains just under 1 hour to Waterloo lots of commuters. Also look at the surrounding villages Micheldever is another commuter station just a bit north of winchester and you should get a house for around £600k in a village outside Winchester. The villages around winchester feed into the winchester secondary schools ( 3 very good acedemic comprehensives then one of the best 6th forms in the country). Non grammar area. It’s very middle class but a lovely child friendly area.

Thanks @mimimoo22, Winchester will be very far from us. Since my partner will need to take a bus from there to his office which will add another 25-30 mins to commute.

Hemel Hempstead and Bishops Stortford used to be pretty good.
