Working towards greater depth

Year 3 report. Says DD is on track to be "working towards greater depth" at the end of the year in each area.

Is "working towards" another way of saying working at greater depth, or is it below GD? I've tried googling but can only find reference to working towards the standard, working at the standard and working at GD.

I know this doesn't matter in the scheme of things - she's obviously doing well and we're happy, just curious really!

That's not the common terminology so I would ask the school to explain. Most schools use Below, Working towards, Age-related and Greater Depth. I would imagine working towards greater depth means they are at the top end of the Age-related bracket. There is a very wide range within Age-related.

Thank you. It would help if they provided some sort of key on the report!

Seems to me that schools go out of their way to give as much information as possible without actually telling you anything meaningful.

He doesn't have greater depth. If he continues to work well then there teacher thinks he is on track to achieve it at the end of the year. Seems clear to me.

Sounds like DD1 although the staff are more unguarded with me than they would be a lot of parents and I get "absolutely teetering on the borderline and it could go either way" as the description given to me verbally with her! She's absolutely a squeak either way - either a hella secure expected level, or the wobbliest lucky greater depth case.

My kids = never straightfoward!

It sounds like if she carry on as she is now, she will get GDS at the end of year. Most children are working towards expected, so I don't think it will say working towards GDS unless she will likely to get it.

I was told both of mine are cuspy which was a new one on me this time!

One on the cusp of expected and one on the cusp of exceeding.

They're both doing very well, I'm especially proud of my dd for being on cusp of expected after 6 years of being deep into the 'working towards'.

I actually had "I really wouldn't want to stake my performance management on her making greater depth" which is a statement in terms of honesty I don't think a lot of parents would have been privy to. I fully appreciated the sentiment though (DD1's teacher is seriously, utterly totally amazeballs) - as long as they were giving her the chance to access the greater depth work and making sure that she wasn't coasting they can have her target down as working towards painting herself purple for all I care.

Huncamuncaa · 05/04/2019 19:56

It means they expect they will be greater depth by the end of the year but, as it is not the end of the year, not all the greater depth material has been covered yet. I.e. They are doing really well!

VashtaNerada · 05/04/2019 20:00

Yes, it means greater depth so far. Hopefully that will stay the same and by the end of the year they will have achieved greater depth. Nobody can achieve it at this point in the year so that’s as good as it could be!
