I ask out of curiosity as a friend who has invited us to lunch asked my son to bring his PS3 (in case it rains) - he doesn't have one or indeed any other game type thing,iPod,nor does he sit at the computer playing games. Not,I hasten to add, because I don't believe in children playing with these things - it's just that he shows no desire to have anything like that...the nearest he gets is arranging playlists of his favourite music on the computer. He has a cd player in his room and that's it. I've persuaded him just recently to wear a watch ! He likes watching telly and the odd dvd but mostly spends his time drawing, writing, creating imaginary worlds/animals etc or reading. I love him just as he is of course, but wondered whether anyone else's ds is similar.

my 13 year old has a pc in his room but that it the only thing he has. (he got for his 13th birthday)

i can't understand the need to have dvds in the car and psps/gameboys attached to the child everywhere they go either.

doughnuts · 10/07/2007 11:05

yes, ds likes car journeys because he loves just looking out of the windows, or drawing - never bored or whiney ever, always amazes me.

My ds has a nintendo ds (his only gadget)and would love a mobile phone (on his list of wants) but he doesn't need one so he will wait for his next birthday maybe. He's only 9.

katelyle · 10/07/2007 11:47

My 11 year old got a Nintendo DS for Christmas, and she got a mobile phone last week because she's travelling quite a distance to school next year and I wasnt her to get the "wow I've got a phone!!!!!!!!!" out of her system before then.
No computers or any other electronic gadgets in bedrooms, and won't be while I have any say in the matter!

Hallgerda · 10/07/2007 13:22

All three of my sons are like that, doughnuts. DS1 started a Year 6 craze for making pretend cardboard gadgets, mind .

harleyd · 10/07/2007 13:28

ds1 and dd1 both have nintendo ds lites.
dd2 has a nintendo gameboy (passed down from ds1). we have an xbox 360 in the living room (which is mine) and an xbox at their grandas house. i have to limit the amount of time spent on these to an hour a day or they would be on them all the time.

doughnuts · 10/07/2007 14:03

Hallgerda - aww that's sweet - a friend's ds has been making cardboard mobiles too ! What other things are your boys interested in ? I sometimes worry that ds is not like other lads, but at the same time love his individuality !

My friend told me that she and her husband went out to dinner with his brother and their sil who brought their 2 year old. They then got out a portable dvd player and put it on the table for the 2 year old to watch.

In a restaurant!!!!

muppetgirl · 10/07/2007 14:06

Am I cruel as my son thinks going on the cbeebies website is the most amazing technical thing ever?

TooTicky · 10/07/2007 14:08

I have avoided these things - it's hard enough sometimes to drag them away from PC/television. My dd1, though, who is 10, prefers books by far.

essbehindyou - no I don't think it's a problem, I was just curious as to whether my son was odd in that he hasn't any desire for these things !

It didn't stop at mobiles, doughnuts - there was an i-time machine, complete with time period discs .

As well as drawing, writing stories and reading, they all play cricket (DS2 (9)rather better than the others, much to the annoyance of DS1). The writing can get a little out of hand sometimes - at one point we had two household newspapers going and there's an intermittent round-the-house postal service. The occasional play happens too, usually with very odd costumes. They do play the odd computer game (quite often the real-life similation sort) on the one-and-only household computer (but they have to get me off it first ). We don't have a TV. DS1 (12) does not want a mobile phone, despite DH trying to persuade him it might be a useful thing to have (I'm not convinced either).

DD1 is getting a Nintendo DS Lite for her 10th birthday. I don't think she would even want one if all her friends didn't have them, but she feels left out when they are all playing Nintendogs and she can't join in. Other than that she has never had any interest in gadgets and we don't have any in the house. She loves reading and drawing and I'm glad of that.

Cammelia · 10/07/2007 20:58

Don't have a ds but my dd is similar

The only gadget she has is a sony walkmand portable cd palyer which has had for a few months (and was really hard to find as they're now so old fashioned)

Imaginary games and doing creative stuff are her favourite ways to spend time out of school

Cammelia · 10/07/2007 20:59

Sorry forgot to say, she's 10

pyjamaqueen · 10/07/2007 21:01

My dd is 10. She has a Nintendo DS, digital camera, MP3. She'd love a mobile phone but I'm saying no to that as she doesn't need it until she's at secondary school.

Tortington · 10/07/2007 21:01

no mother on mumnset would allow such a thing. their children read shakespeare at 3 doncha know

PestoMonster · 10/07/2007 21:04

My 10 year old dd doesn't have any electronic gadgets either, apart from a CD/radio in her bedroom which she shares with dd2 (8). We don't really feel the need as they both enjoy using the laptop (which we all share) and prefer doing other stuff such as making things, reading, knitting and playing out!

janeite · 10/07/2007 21:11

My 10 year old has a cd player in her bedroom, uses the family pc and plays on her dad's laptop occasionally. No gameboys, no mobile etc. She writes stories on the computer and goes on BBC etc sites.

She's just started asking for a mobile but will not get one until she starts secondary school and then only a cheapo one with no phone etc. I really don't think she needs them and intend to hold out on playing "catch up" with friends etc for as long as I possibly can.

Having said that, she'd watch television all day if I'd let her get away with it.
